Because everything seems to work out in the movies, Meg Ryan was able to get a taxi -- driving the wrong way on Arlington Street -- to turn the corner and stop for her on Newbury Street. And a New York taxi at that. Filming for "The Women" continued yesterday with more scenes on Newbury Street, which is filling in for the Big Apple's chic Madison Avenue retail stretch. "We'll be able to use Boston for almost everything," said producer Victoria Pearman, who is Mick Jagger's partner in Jagged Films. "We're very, very happy with what we've been able to do here so far." Pearman, a longtime summer resident of Martha's Vineyard, met the film's director, Diane English, several years ago on the island. Between takes of a scene in which Ryan and costar Annette Bening chat while strolling with their arms loaded with bags from upscale shops, Pearman told us that English's script stays true to both Clare Boothe Luce's play and George Cukor's 1939 film, in which all of the characters are female. "Not until the very end, when a baby boy is born, do we see the first male," Pearman said. "Not one extra is male." This was evident along Newbury Street, where every face in the camera's path was female. That didn't stop Andrew Wilkinson, executive chef of Skipjack's in Copley Square, from delivering some of his clam chowder to the set after hearing English was hankering for some. She was spotted enjoying a cup despite the 80-plus degree temperature.
We have no doubt that
Tom's baby is cute as a button, but he's not a
Brady.
Bridget Moynahan's peeps finally confirmed the boy's name yesterday, and it's
John Edward Thomas Moynahan. The actress's publicist,
Gary Mantoosh, told us Bridget is "excited about being a mother" and "very pleased that the father, Tom Brady, was able to be there for the birth and spend a few days with their new child." The statement, issued six days after the baby's birth in Los Angeles, is the first indication that the Pats QB did, in fact, arrive at the hospital in time to see his son born. Brady, you'll recall, missed practice last Wednesday and flew to LA on the
Kraft family's private jet. Considering that Brady and Bridget broke up last winter -- and he's been dating Brazilian supermodel
Gisele Bundchen ever since -- it's perhaps not surprising that the baby has been given his mom's surname, not his dad's. Nonsense, says
Margo Howard, who writes the advice column Dear Margo. "That must have been her choice and he acquiesced, but I don't know why he would. I mean, he's responsible for the kid, financially," said Howard, whose mom "Eppie" Lederer was Ann Landers. "If you're knocked up and you don't care for the guy, you give the baby your last name, but Tom Brady's nobody to be ashamed of, and everyone will call him the Brady kid anyway. I don't get it."
Split could cost Henry
Notwithstanding the club's claims to the contrary, Red Sox owner
John Henry's divorce could get ugly. The Palm Beach Post is reporting today that Henry's wife,
Peggy, has filed papers in a Florida court that make it clear she intends to challenge the couple's prenuptial agreement. In response to her husband's divorce filing, in which he termed their 14-year marriage "irretrievably broken," Peggy denies the prenup and says she wants alimony; child support for their 10-year-old daughter,
Sara; and an "equitable distribution" of the couple's marital assets. (While she's at it, she also asks that her soon-to-be ex cover her attorney's fees.) Henry, who runs a Boca Raton-based investment firm, is worth an estimated $800 million. Today's Post piece also raises questions about the Brookline mansion Henry recently bought from
Frank McCourt for $16 million. Under Florida law, if it's determined that he used "marital assets" to buy the seven-bedroom spread, Henry may have to pay his wife $8 million, or half the purchase price. Sox spokesman
Charles Steinberg previously had said the divorce was "completely amicable" and the couple "continue to be great friends."
Roach brothers
Radio station WBCN hosted alt-rockers Papa Roach --
Jacoby Shaddix,
Jerry Horton,
Tobin Esperance, and
Dave Buckner -- yesterday at a rooftop pool party at the Colonnade Hotel in the Back Bay.
Night out with the boys in the band
It wasn't quite "Girls Gone Wild," but a bevy of beauties did show up at Saint the other night to catch a glimpse of former boy banders
Rich Cronin of LFO,
Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees, and
Chris Kirkpatrick of 'N Sync. (Along with Color Me Badd's
Bryan Abrams, the three appear on the new VH1 reality show "Mission: Manband.") The lads were joined later by former New Kid
Jordan Knight, who knows something about fame and fortune. Who proved most popular with the ladies? Kirkpatrick.
Back for 'Bachelor'
Richie LaMontagne, the pro boxer from Everett who has worked as an actor and a model, has landed a small part in "Bachelor No. 2." A regular on the local film scene for years, he appeared in "Flawless" with
Robert De Niro, and has modeled for Versace and Calvin Klein. "It's great to get back into things here," LaMontagne told us yesterday during a second day of shooting at Centerfolds. "By 'here' I mean Boston, not a strip club." Working with the film's stars,
Kate Hudson and Arlington native
Dane Cook, has been a breeze. "She's so beautiful, as a person," LaMontagne said. "She comes into the room, and she just lights the whole place up." With the news that Hudson's former boyfriend
Owen Wilson may have attempted to commit suicide, crew at the set yesterday said they were expecting the day to be tense. But LaMontagne said that wasn't the case. "Everyone's serious and being respectful, but it's been OK," he told us. "She's a great gal."
'Gone' to France
If
Ben Affleck's directorial debut is as good as Miramax says it is, why isn't it entered at the New York or Toronto film festivals? Instead, "Gone, Baby, Gone," which Affleck shot in and around South Boston last summer, is screening Sept. 5 at the Deauville Festival of American Film on Sept. 5. The Cambridge-bred actor not only produced and directed, but he also co-wrote the movie, which is based on the novel by
Dennis Lehane. (Affleck and kid brother
Casey, who stars in the film, are going to France for the fest.) "Deauville always has a great combo of smart independent films and more commercial fare, so we thought that this movie would be a great fit for the festival," said Miramax president of production
Keri Putnam. Nothing to sneeze at, the Deauville lineup also includes films by
Sidney Lumet,
Paul Haggis, and
Andrew Dominik.
Is she or isn't she?
Word that supermodel
Gisele Bundchen is part of next season's "Dancing With the Stars" may have been part of an ABC plan to ferret out leaks. While the actual list of the toe-tapping celebs will be announced on ABC tonight, the folks at
TMZ.com posted a purposted list Monday spoiling the network's fun. Then yesterday the tattlers at
TMZ.com updated their post with a word that the ABC execs may have fed false names to find out who's been leaking what to whom.
Huh?
'Well, personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map.'
