The kindest cut of all

Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis shaved off his famed goatee at the Cask 'n Flagon yesterday, collecting $5,000 from Gillette for his Hits for Kids charity. Stylists from Newbury Street's Salon Marc Harris also helped out, doling out free shaves to anyone who donated to the organization.

"Grey's Anatomy" star Ellen Pompeo and Boston-bred music exec Chris Ivery got married on Friday at New York's City Hall, where Mayor Michael Bloomberg served as their witness. The couple got engaged a year ago while celebrating the actress's birthday. Pompeo, an Everett native, repeatedly professed that she and Ivery wouldn't go for the usual Hollywood hoopla, preferring a quiet wedding instead. And low-key it was. We're told a city clerk performed the minutes-long ceremony with only Bloomberg, a Medford native, and First Deputy Mayor Patti Harris accompanying the couple. "They are over the moon," Pompeo's spokesgal Jennifer Allen told us yesterday. The newlyweds were spotted courtside at the Knicks game Sunday night at Madison Square Garden. Pompeo was back in Hollywood yesterday filming "Grey's," which is expected to shut down soon because of the writers' strike.

WTKK apologizes
WTKK apologized yesterday for a comment by Michele McPhee that seemed to equate homosexuality with pedophilia. McPhee, the brassy Boston Herald reporter who hosts a daily, two-hour talk show on 96.9 FM, was talking about the trend in the fashion industry toward skinny models. After saying that the industry is largely dominated by gay men, McPhee said: "And who do homosexual men like? Little boys." Asked about the comment later, McPhee declined to talk to us. But a station official then issued the following statement: "Michele's comments were made in the context of a fashion industry that designs women's clothes for atypical body types. She regrets if her remarks were taken to mean anything else, as no other meaning was intended."

Paying off Series bet
Denver isn't a deadbeat town, after all. It took them a while, but Mile High muckety-mucks have finally delivered on their World Series wagers with their East Coast counterparts. Colorado Senators Ken Salazar and Wayne Allard anted up 100 pounds of Colorado-raised steak, which was served last night at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans. (Chef Steve Ravinski of Number 5 Strawberry in Acton helped prepare the meal with his sous chef Gregory Ludlum, while chef Katherine See of Kingfish Hall provided the sides.) And Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has sent his care package, which contained enough Mi Ranchito tortilla chips, Epic Valley Salsa, and Celestial Seasonings tea for 100 hungry people. The items, along with burritos and subs from Denver-based chains Chipotle and Quiznos, will be served during Saturday's Boston Helps the Homeless event.

Scared out of diapers
TMZ.com posted a video yesterday that proves Sox super fan Stephen King is a frightful fellow. In the clip, the high priest of horror is greeting fans before the New York premiere of "The Mist" when someone asks him to autograph their daughter's diaper. Saying he had "changed a few" in his day, King happily obliges, but the kid, thinking the best-selling author's absconding with her diaper, throws a fit.

Designer's delight
Longwoods Events CEO Jim Apteker and his wife, Alina, attended the party for Valentino's new book at Christie's in New York the other night, and rubbed suede shoulders with the legendary fashion designer. Valentino signed the book "To Alina and Aniela," the couple's daughter.

Filming around town
Actor Mark Ruffalo is in town for rehearsals for "Real Men Cry," costarring Ethan Hawke, Donnie Wahlberg, and Amanda Peet. The crime drama, written and directed by Southie native Brian Goodman, begins filming after Thanksgiving. . . . William H. Macy, in town filming "The Lonely Maiden," was spied relaxing at Alibi at the Liberty Hotel Monday night.

Pitching in for the troops
Sox pitcher Curt Schilling joined teen actress Selena Gomez on the dais at "A Salute to Our troops," a ceremony hosted this week by Microsoft and the United Service Organizations. Others taking part in the event at the Rainbow Room in New York include illusionist David Blaine, actresses Joely Fisher, Callie Thorne, Ali Landry, and John Mayer’s girlfriend Minka Kelly.

Wanted: More big men
Here's a strategy the Celtics should have adopted 20 years ago. Boston Casting bigwig Angela Peri is looking for a 6-foot-11 African-American male to stand in for Celts hotshot Kevin Garnett while he films a commercial tomorrow. If there's another guy like KG in town, he won't be an extra for long.
