It's not every day that Mayor Tom Menino honors a Yankees fan - but Broadway legend Chita Rivera realizes an honor when she receives one. The Tony Award-winning singer/dancer was in town to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at "Swellegance," the annual fund-raiser for Boston Youth Moves, and Menino named Saturday as Chita Rivera Day in Boston. After admitting she was partial to the pinstripes, Rivera quickly added: "I also have a very great sense of humor." At the reception that followed, video praises were lavished by Rosie O'Donnell, who wants to be the Broadway baby's "best friend," and David Hyde Pierce (surrounded by his "Curtains" cast) who said "Nobody moves like you." Kelsey Grammer's former TV bro was followed - in person - by Grammer's "Cheers" wife Bebe Neuwirth, who started her tribute to the original "Chicago" Velma with: "It's lovely to be here in Boston where everyone seems to know my name."
A new Damon on the way
It was supposed to be just another outing for Matt Damon to collect more praise for his blockbuster "The Bourne Ultimatum." But the Oscar-winner and his wife, Luciana, made news when arriving last night at the Empire Film Awards at London's Grosvenor House Hotel: The couple is expecting another child. Damon's rep, Jennifer Allen, confirmed the reports. "They couldn't be happier," Allen told People magazine. "They're so excited." The new addition will join Isabella, who is nearly 21 months old, and 9-year-old, Alexia, Luciana's daughter from a previous marriage. The Damons have been out of the view of paparazzi in Europe where he has been filming "Green Zone," for the last couple of months. But Matt didn't leave London empty-handed. "The Bourne Ultimatum" won the Empire best film award.
Hanks goes mugging
Oscar-winning actor
Tom Hanks picked up a few - well, 100 - souvenirs during his tour of some of Boston's best known historic sights. (Hanks was in town for Friday night's premiere of HBO's "John Adams" miniseries, which Hanks produced.) After walking around the gift shop at the Old State House, Hanks pointed to the Boston Massacre mug and told the staff: "I'll take 100 of those mugs." Adams represented British soldiers in their trial after the altercation. Although the folks at the gift shop originally thought the "Forrest Gump" star was kidding,
Gary Goetzman, who works with Hanks at his production company, assured them Hanks was serious.
Jill Scott in the house
In Boston for her concert last night at the Orpheum Theatre, singer
Jill Scott turned a few heads at Scullers Jazz Club on Saturday night where she caught
Oleta Adams's concert. . . . And watching his Bruins best the Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon, NHL Hall-of-Famer
Cam Neely was spotted grabbing a bite at Persephone. The new eatery in the Fort Port Channel area of South Boston is the latest from Lumiere chef/owner
Michael Leviton.
Another big day for '21'
Back Bay author
Ben Mezrich is getting pretty comfortable walking the red carpet for the movie "21," which is based on his bestseller "Bringing Down the House." Over the weekend, the movie, about a crack blackjack team from MIT that beat the Vegas casinos, opened the South By Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas. The packed house included the film's star
Jim Sturgess, his real life counterpart
Jeff Ma, former CBS news anchor
Dan Rather, and actresses
Vanessa Hudgens,
Morgan Fairchild, and
Tess Harper. (Harper told Mezrich's wife,
Tonya, that she had just picked up a copy of the book at the airport to read on her way to Austin.) The movie opens March 28.
Nomar's condo gone
Former Red Sox shortstop
Nomar Garciaparra, who now plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers, sold the Charlestown condo that he called home during the latter part of his Boston run. Garciaparra sold the 2,514-square-foot, three-bedroom, 3 1/2 bath townhouse on Constellation Wharf for $1 million, according to county records. No. 5 put the unit on the market in early 2006 for $1.2 million. . . . TV talk show host
Larry King was in Vero Beach, Fla., yesterday to catch the Red Sox play the Dodgers in spring training action.
