Liv Tyler says people thought her new scary movie was a snuff film - because it was so realistic.

The 'Lord of the Rings' actress - who makes her horror film debut in the upcoming 'The Strangers', about a couple who are terrorised when they take a break to a remote holiday home - has revealed some scenes had to be cut because they were so frightening.

Liv said: "It's a really eccentric, dark little movie. I think they actually wound up cutting a little because it was too realistic - people thought it was a snuff film or something."

'The Strangers' sees Bryan Bertino, who also wrote the script, make his directorial debut.

Liv stars alongside Scott Speedman, Kip Weeks and Gemma Ward in the movie.

The 30-year-old actress recently revealed she wants to make less films so she can spend more time with her son Milo and husband Royston Langdon.

Liv - who stars opposite Edward Norton in upcoming summer blockbuster 'The Incredible Hulk' - said: "It's good for me to take a break. I love staying at home and cooking and doing fun things with my son."
