Nicole Richie and Joel Madden took baby daughter Harlow to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend.

The Good Charlotte rocker decided his fiancee needed a well-earned break after becoming a mother in January, and thought the famous music event would be perfect.

He said: "Nicole hasn't been able to do a whole lot over the year, so we're having a little family trip. I rented a house and surprised Nicole with a weekend trip because she likes Coachella.

"She was like, 'I really want to go!' So I surprised her. We brought the baby too. We love just hanging by the pool."

The 29-year-old musician - who also played a DJ set at a pre-festival party on Saturday (26.04.08) - also spoke about rumours Nicole's best friend Paris Hilton is planning to tie the knot to his twin brother Benji.

When asked who he thought would marry first, he replied: "We're the family with the baby so I think probably us, but who knows!"

Other celebrities at the Coachella festival included Sean Penn - who encouraged young people to get more involved in political and environmental issues - Kelly Osbourne and Dita Von Teese.

The famous event was headlined on Saturday by Prince, who treated fans to a set of his greatest hits including 'Purple Rain'.

He also surprisingly performed a cover of the Radiohead classic 'Creep'.
