Although she is fighting a possible arrest for an alleged headbutting, Amy Winehouse has one good bit of news - the respected Sunday Times (of London) Rich List has valued the "Rehab" singer as being worth $20 million. The annual list, published yesterday, charts the changing fortunes of Britain's wealthiest people in the worlds of business and entertainment. Although personal turmoil led to canceled tours for Winehouse this past year, album sales on the strength of her five Grammy wins have stayed strong for the 24-year-old. Winehouse, the daughter of a taxi driver, is estimated to be the 10th richest musician under 30 and is ahead of the other singers in the recent invasion of Brit Belles - Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, and the recently widowed Corinne Bailey Rae - all of whom are valued at $12 million.
GLAAD awards
Two ABC series repeated as winners at the annual awards honoring good work in media presentations of gays and lesbians. "Brothers & Sisters" and "Ugly Betty" received awards for outstanding drama and comedy series during the 19th annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday night. Both shows, which feature openly gay or transsexual regular characters, received the same awards last year from GLAAD. Other winners included Bravo's "
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" for outstanding reality program,
Janet Jackson for the Vanguard Award, and
Rufus Wainwright for the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, in honor of the late casting director who fought homophobia in the entertainment industry. (AP)
'Baby' stands tall
A pair of new comedies aimed at distinctly different audiences took the top two spots at the weekend box office in North America, with
Tina Fey and
Amy Poehler's "Baby Mama" leading the charge. According to studio estimates issued yesterday, "Baby Mama" earned a better-than-expected $18.3 million, as young women flocked to the "Odd Couple"-style pregnancy hijinks. The stoner sequel "Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" opened at No. 2 with $14.6 million, generating buzz among male youngsters. Last weekend's champion, the
Jackie Chan-
Jet Li martial-arts vehicle "The Forbidden Kingdom," fell to No. 3 with $11.2 million. The top 10 contained one other new release, the
Hugh Jackman thriller "Deception," which opened at No. 10 with a disappointing $2.2 million. (Reuters)
