Standing by his jump
Tom Cruise says his couch-jumping on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" seemed to set off a "confluence" of bad publicity for him, but he's not sure he would take it back. "That was a moment, and it was real, and I don't know if I would [do it differently]," Cruise said during an hourlong interview with Winfrey taped in his Telluride, Colo., home. During the broadcast yesterday, Cruise said his antics on Winfrey's show three years ago were an authentic way of expressing his feelings for Katie Holmes, who is now his wife. Toxicology tests show that Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira was intoxicated when the tour bus he was driving crashed into freeway barrels in suburban Houston in March, authorities said. The toxicology tests were released this week, and the Houston Chronicle reported on the results yesterday. Doctors performed two brain surgeries and repaired an aneurysm on his right lung. The newspaper also reported that Navaira was arrested for driving while intoxicated in September 2000. (AP)Uma fan: I'm harmless
A fan accused of creepy activities that left Uma Thurman "completely freaked out" insisted yesterday that his longtime crush on the actress was harmless. "In a misguided way I was trying to give her an opportunity to meet me and give myself an opportunity to meet her," said the defendant, who identified himself on the witness stand as Jackson William Leslie Jordan. "I was feeling distressed," said Jordan, 37. "I had this feeling of longing for Ms. Thurman and I was trying to explain it. I was not trying to scare her in any way." (AP)Diddy gets a star
Sean "Diddy" Combs (inset), who plans to split time in Los Angeles and New York while pursuing an acting career, received a star yesterday on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Actor Jamie Foxx was on hand to introduce Combs as his star was revealed. (AP)Snipes to appeal
Lawyers for Wesley Snipes have filed notice to appeal his federal tax conviction. The 45-year-old action actor was sentenced to three years in prison last week on three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file his income tax returns. He will remain free until he's ordered to surrender by the federal Bureau of Prisons. (AP)True to the schools
Actor Denzel Washington says inner-city schoolkids have to be reminded that scientists are more important than entertainers. Washington and his wife, Pauletta, award annual scholarships for neuroscience research to college students and make the presentations at city schools. Yesterday they went to Mount Vernon High School in New York's Westchester County. Mount Vernon is Washington's hometown. (AP)Poor Jose
"People have to understand that $35 million; you're paying the government 41 percent. That leaves you with about $17 or $18 million, not even.
