The Hub has more hardware for the trophy case. The Celts, who won their 17th NBA title in June, were chosen as Team of the Year at this week's ESPY Awards in LA. (The awards show airs Sunday at 9 p.m.) With the exception of Scot Pollard and Tony Allen, all of the C's attended, and we're told it was quite a time. "The guys were blown away. Everything - the red carpet, the paparazzi, the celebs, the parties - it was all killer," said C's spokeswoman Heather Walker, who was hanging with Justin Timberlake at the after-party at the
Surf before turf
Tom Brady was also a winner at the ESPYs, but the Pats QB didn't attend the awards show. Instead, No. 12, who's due back in town in a matter of days to start training camp, was riding the waves at Gisele Bundchen's Costa Rican compound. Wearing a soaking T-shirt and board shorts, Brady, who won the ESPY for best NFL player, was snapped by the paparazzi enjoying the sun and surf.
Manion joins Donaldson case
Julie Donaldson is getting a lot of support, not least of all from attorney Harry Manion. The legal eagle is representing the WHDH-TV (Channel 7) sports reporter who's been on paid leave since allegedly being assaulted last month by her boyfriend, Ivan Lattimore. In addition, Donaldson is being advised by Joe Baerlein and Peter Meade of the Boston public relations firm Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications. Donaldson, a former beauty queen who joined Channel 7 in March, testified in court that Lattimore threw her against a wall and punched her in the face after they had been drinking and dancing at the Back Bay nightclub Saint. She said she suffered broken bones in her face and continues to have numbness around her right eye. Lattimore, who's also accused of groping a woman the same night, is being held without bail until his trial Sept. 8. Manion, who's repped countless media personalities and athletes in Boston, including Bob Lobel, Ted Wayman, and Pete Carroll, told us yesterday he was brought on board to deal "with the criminal process and other issues that might arise." Asked what those other issues might be, Manion mentioned there could be an invasion-of-privacy issue, presumably stemming from a purported sex tape that Donaldson and Lattimore recorded just hours before the assault, and which Lattimore's attorney, Jessica Thrall, has asked to see. Manion said Channel 7 has been "very supportive" of his client, and he doesn't think that will change.
For filmmaker, a personal journey, professional notice
Boston-area filmmaker Melanie Perkins (inset) is up for an investigative journalism Emmy for her 2007 documentary, "Have You Seen Andy?" The haunting Cinemax Reel Life film details Perkins's search for answers in the kidnapping of her 10-year-old childhood friend, Andy Puglisi, from a Lawrence pool in 1976. For Perkins, who immersed herself in the highly personal project for almost a decade, the nomination was a happy - and validating - surprise. When she got the call from HBO's VP of documentary programming Nancy Abraham, she said, "I was actually in the car with my children . . . and of course my older two were fighting. I was thrilled, of course. I told my husband and my kids and they're like, 'What does that mean? What's for lunch?' " Perkins will, of course, be at the big gala on Sept. 21. But what she really wants is for Andy's body to be found, so his mother can have some peace; there's an area near the pool she's still pressing police to search thoroughly, she said. "There's still so much that could be done with Andy's case.
East Coast meets West Coast
Ed Kane was on the West Coast last night at a party celebrating the opening of Shrine at the MGM at Foxwoods. (Wait, isn't Foxwoods on the East Coast?) Kane flew to LA with Sox owners John Henry and Tom Werner - on Henry's jet, of course - and the trio hooked up there with Shrine co-owners Joe Kane and Randy Greenstein. The guest list for last night's shindig, held at a Beverly Hills mansion, included Paul Pierce, Lauren "Lo" Bosworth from "The Hills," and "Dancing With the Stars" siren Karina Smirnoff. The DJ was Paul Oakenfold.
Offering his support
Jay Manuel, "America's Next Top Model" photo shoot guru, helped several hundred women (and, it has to be said, a few men) address their most trying brassiere dilemmas last night after a Calvin Klein "intimates" fashion show at Lord & Taylor. Sipping champagne with raspberries, the ladies queried: How can I keep up drooping bra straps? How can I enhance my chest? And how can I keep a strapless bra from going south? What we wanted to know was why women trust this 6-foot-1 bleached-blond, spiky-haired man with their most private cleavage concerns? Now we know. Manuel explained everything from the Racerback to the 5-way Plunge Bra with humor and kindness. (When one woman said she was fat, he gently corrected, "We don't like to say fat. That's not nice." He prefers "fuller figure," like Marilyn Monroe.) "You want support," Manuel advised. "We don't want anything hanging out or sagging down. We all need a little lift." He claims his secret is his pro-female attitude, honed with one of his first models - his mom. "I got into the business for the empowerment of women," explained the former makeup artist, who took a little time out from fashion Wednesday night to see "The Dark Knight" at Jordan's in Reading. Manuel also dished on the next season of "Top Model," revealing he and judge "Miss" J. Alexander will grace the poster. And the finale runway will be crazy. "It's Galliano-esque," he whispered. "And it's 480 feet long." That's about four times the length of a normal runway. Sounds challenging.
A touch of anticipation
Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, whose wife, Ashley, is pregnant with the couple's first child, said he wasn't bothered by the booing he received in New York, but confessed it made his wife a little uncomfortable. "My wife told me she didn't feel safe. She's pregnant with a [expletive] little baby," Paps told reporters. "It kind of [ticks] you off when your family gets involved."
