Victor Garber is apparently sorry he talked to Us Weekly, after the mag reported he confirmed that his former "Alias" costar and BFF Jennifer Garner is pregnant. "I haven't confirmed that at all, no," Garber backpedaled to E! Online Thursday night. "I know they want to have another child and hopefully that's true, but I don't know that. It's a very . . . personal thing." Us Weekly reported earlier that Garber answered, "Yes, she is," to whether Garner and our boy Ben Affleck are expecting baby No. 2. (Their daughter, Violet, is 2). The pregnancy rumors were sparked recently after Garner ran around LA in loose-fitting shirts. This week, E! Online senior editor Marc Malkin also spotted the star at an obstetrician's office. Poor Garber - first he had to cover after officiating Ben and Jen's secret 2005 island wedding; now he's got a potential baby to conceal. It might be more than one man can bear. And then there's the paparazzi. "When I was with Jennifer it was insane," Garber told us in LA yesterday, remembering a recent trip to Boston to visit the actress as she filmed two movies back to back. "We went to Hamersley's, my favorite place," he said. "We had a great time." More mellow was his last Massachusetts vacay - seeing friend Nicky Martin's "She Loves Me" in Williamstown. The two may reunite for "Present Laughter" on Broadway, said the actor, currently at work on ABC's "Eli Stone." He last tackled the play with Martin at the Huntington.

Edwards in Salem
Former presidential candidate - and vice presidential hopeful? - John Edwards will speak with his wife, Elizabeth, at Salem State College Sept. 23. They are expected to give the lowdown on family campaigning and explore Elizabeth's work on health care, said Edwards adviser and Salem alum Michael Goldman.

Mad, mad mad world
Newton's own John Slattery - a.k.a. Roger Sterling on "Mad Men" - is up for an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a drama. The actor will go head-to-head with William Shatner, Ted Danson, Zeljko Ivanek, and Michael Emerson at the Sept. 21 awards ceremony. "He's one of six, so obviously we're all thrilled," said his proud sis, Ellen Kinnealey, of Canton. (Slattery's parents still live in West Newton.) "We've all been calling, teasing him that we'll vote for William Shatner." Slattery also got eight pages of the GQ treatment - modeling subtle plaid suits - in the mag's August issue. "He looks fabulous," his sister gushed. "So handsome."

Damon to host benefit
For the third year, Matt Damon will host the One X One children's charity benefit in Toronto on Sept. 8. The gala raises money for Canadian and global charities and will feature performances by Wyclef Jean, the African Children's Choir, and other stars. Ben Affleck hosted a benefit for the organization in June in Calgary.

Now she's cooking
Looks like Bree will be more than a hausfrau soon. "Desperate Housewives" star and Marlborough native Marcia Cross, meeting with reporters in Los Angeles at the Television Critics Association press tour, said she's excited about the ABC dramedy's five-year time jump, shown in a teaser to the press. Turns out domestic goddess Bree Hodge becomes a successful businesswoman and cookbook author. "I was thrilled because I knew sort of where Bree was going and I was really looking for her to get out of the house," Cross said. "I mean, she's going to get out of the house with her muffins, but at least she's getting out of the house."

Hair and there
Stylist Omid Maxey was working hard at Salon Safar on Newbury Street yesterday, filming boss Serge Safar for a Style Network promo on Safar's upcoming "Split Ends" appearance. The reality show - a catty, sometimes tearful, drama-filled exchange program for hair stylists - has been known to send high-end, big-city types to Midwestern strip malls, and throw the small-town folk into the big ponds. But Safar, who expects to film next month, has no idea where he's going, said Maxey, who was also filming a pilot episode of "East Coast Style" for the Style Network yesterday. "There's a lot going on today," Maxey said, laughing. Safar won't be the first Boston stylist to appear on "Split Ends." Shag owner Sandy Poirier tortured California salon owner Hasblady Guzman a few months ago, while Shag stylist Dayna Gamba took her edgy, punk-rock cuts west. Wanna see Guzman flat-iron Poirier's goatee? Check out the rerun on the Style Network tonight.

Pols night out
About 40 pols - from both sides of the aisle - converged on La Casa de Pedro in Watertown Wednesday night, before watching actor Ken Howard play Tip O'Neill in the New Repertory Theatre's "According to Tip" at the Arsenal Center for the Arts. "Pina coladas and mojitos were out in force," said former state senator Warren Tolman, who partied with his brother, Senator Steven Tolman, Senate president Therese Murray, minority leader Senator Richard Tisei, and Senate Ways and Means Committee chair Steven Panagiotakos at the Venezuelan hotspot. Apparently, a few drinks help mucho in eliciting that elusive spirit of bipartisanship. "It was nice, because this is the business time of year for these guys," Warren Tolman said. "They just finished the budget. It was good to let their hair down and see each other in a different light." So, how wild did this get? Any dancing on tables? "There may have been," general manager Luis Maggioli conceded. "But what happens at Pedro, stays at Pedro."
