1962: Marilyn Monroe was found dead in the bedroom of her Los Angeles home. Her death was ruled a "probable suicide" caused by an overdose of sleeping pills. She was 36.
1966: Comic Lenny Bruce died of a drug overdose. He was 40.
1970: "Soul Train" made its debut on a Chicago TV station.
1971: Paul McCartney announced the formation of Wings, which featured his wife Linda on keyboards. Other members included former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine.
1984: Actor Richard Burton died at a hospital in Geneva. He was 58.
1986: Actor Tom Selleck married Jillie Mack.
1987: Def Leppard released its "Hysteria" album.
1994: Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley made their first public appearance as newlyweds, in Budapest.
1994: "(Stay) I Miss You" by Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories hit No. 1 on the pop charts. It was the first No. 1 single by an unsigned act.
1995: Grateful Dead singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack while undergoing drug rehabilitation. He was 53.
2000: Actor Alec Guinness died in southern England at the age of 86.
2001: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were divorced after eleven years of marriage. ![]()
