The weight of soul singer Isaac Hayes's legacy in Memphis could be measured in a single remark at his memorial service yesterday. "What would you say if you were flying into Memphis, and they said you are about to land at Isaac Hayes International Airport?" US Representative Steve Cohen asked, drawing a huge burst of applause during a four-hour service of music, speakers, and video clips. Cohen, who represented Hayes's area of Memphis, said the city should celebrate Hayes as it celebrates Elvis Presley. The deep-voiced soul singer died Aug. 10 after he was found unconscious at his Memphis residence. About 3,000 fans and friends attended the service. Speakers included the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton, and fellow Scientologists Anne Archer and Kelly Preston. (AP)

Tour complications
Malaysia's Islamic opposition party has urged the government to cancel a concert by Avril Lavigne (inset), saying the Canadian singer's onstage moves are "too sexy," an official said yesterday. Lavigne, a Grammy-nominated rock singer who burst to fame with her 2002 debut album "Let's Go," plans to start her monthlong Asia tour with a performance in Kuala Lumpur on Aug. 29. "We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance," said Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party official. "We want . . . artists that are good role models." (AP)
