The boys narrowly beat the girls at the box office over the weekend, as DreamWorks' "Tropic Thunder" held onto the No. 1 spot. The Hollywood spoof, starring Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr., pulled in $16.1 million, according to studio estimates, and has rung up $65.7 million in its two-week run. It became the third film in a blockbuster-packed summer to stay on top for two weekends in a row, along with "Iron Man," which also starred Downey, and "The Dark Knight." Coming in second this weekend was Sony Pictures' "The House Bunny," which opened with $15.1 million, according to estimates. The comedy, penned by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, who wrote the 2001 hit "Legally Blonde," features Anna Faris in her first major leading role, as a Playboy Mansion exile mothering and making over an entire sorority of social outcasts. Opening in third place with an estimated $12.3 million was Universal Pictures' testosterone-fueled "Death Race," an R-rated remake of a 1975 film about car races with life-or-death stakes, starring Jason Statham. Run on Biden's book
A memoir by Senator Joe Biden, once as forgotten as his presidential run, is now a bestseller. A day after Senator Barack Obama chose Biden as his running mate for the Democratic ticket, Biden's "Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics" was in the top 10 on Barnes Noble.com and in the top 40 on Amazon.com. It was so in demand that yesterday it was listed as out of stock by both booksellers. The Random House Publishing Group released the memoir in the summer of 2007, several months after Biden announced his candidacy for president. But, like so many campaign works, "Promises to Keep" was no more successful than its author, who dropped out of the race in January 2008. A year after it came out, "Promises to Keep" wasn't yet available in paperback, a sign that the publisher had given up on the book. (AP)

'90210' party blends old and new
Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, and the cast of the CW's "90210" toasted the teen drama's return to television Saturday night at a lavish invitation-only beachside premiere party. The sandy soiree was held inside tents on the Malibu shore - about 20 miles away from the Beverly Hills ZIP code made famous by the original series, which ran on Fox from 1990 to 2000. Original series stars Doherty and Garth, who will reprise their roles as Brenda Walsh and Kelly Taylor in the new show, arrived separately. Joe E. Tata, who returns as Peach Pit cafe owner Nat, also attended. However, it was the new cast members who seemed to be having the most fun. Tristan Wilds, who stars as recent Beverly Hills transplant Dixon Wilson, and Dustin Milligan, who plays popular jock Ethan Ward, chatted at the party's meat carving station. Lori Loughlin, who portrays Wilson's mother, Debbie, and Jessica Walter, who plays Debbie's mother, Tabitha, also mingled. The new "90210" is slated to premiere Sept 2. (AP)

Unconventional
"If I were in the Obama camp, I would lock Ben Affleck and Barbra Streisand away in a closet for the rest of the year." - Todd Harris, Republican strategist and former aide to candidate Fred Thompson
