Madonna request denied

A judge yesterday rejected Madonna's request to adopt a second child from Malawi and said it would set a dangerous precedent to bend rules requiring that prospective parents live there for some period. Madonna's lawyer, Alan Chinula, said she plans to appeal the ruling. The country's child welfare minister had come out Thursday in support of the pop superstar's application to adopt 3-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James. But in a ruling yesterday, Judge Esme Chombo sided with critics who have said exceptions should not be made for the star. (AP)

An online chain of posts involving actress Demi Moore apparently prompted police to go to the aid of a California woman who was having suicidal thoughts. Police in San Jose received a call early yesterday from a person in Dallas who was tipped off to a supposed suicide attempt through the social networking site Twitter.
