It was catch us if you can for the cast and crew of "The Company Men" yesterday. John Wells, director of the downsizing drama now filming in Boston, began his day with Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, and Craig T. Nelson atop the 18-story office and retail tower building that's under construction on Joe Fallon's Fan Pier. (The movie shoot took place as the pier prepares to host the three-week Volvo Ocean Race celebration, which will include concerts, races, festivals, and food demos from April 25-May 16.) Ben Affleck also stars in "The Company Men," but he was in New York yesterday to hype his new political thriller, "State of Play," on the "Today" show. By late morning, the movie crowd had already decamped for the South End, where Wells set up shots at a tony townhouse on Waltham Street. It was there that we spied the Harvard-educated Jones sitting outside, chatting with the crew.
An old look for the new guy
Running back
Fred Taylor donned an old-school Pats jersey for his first Reebok photo shoot as one of
Bill Belichick's guys. This year, as part of the NFL's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the American Football League, the Pats - and the seven other original AFL teams - will wear their '60s-era jerseys in two games.
Better 'Late' than never
Joe Wong, a local funny guy who's on the "Late Show With
David Letterman" tonight, says it took him four years to get the gig. He first auditioned in 2005, but was rejected by Letterman talent scout/Emerson College grad
Eddie Brill. Last year, Brill changed his mind. "He came to town and said, 'I want to see Joe Wong again.' " Wong shares the hour with
Russell Crowe, who'll be promoting his new film with
Ben Affleck, "State of Play." Wong told us he managed to see
Zac Efron during the taping (they passed each other in a hallway), but he got no face time with Crowe. "My wife saw the back of him, but that's about it." The Arlington comic says his routine is about immigration, marriage, and "my fabulous physique and tremendous driving skills." Enough said.
Eaton in Big Apple
Rebecca Eaton, executive producer of WGBH's "Masterpiece Mystery!," was in New York the other night to see series host
Alan Cumming receive the Great Scot award from the National Trust of Scotland, which is committed to preserving Scotland's cultural heritage. Cumming's date for the night was his dear old mum,
Mary. The next night, Eaton collected the Christopher Award for the the Emmy-nominated miniseries "Cranford."
Blago vs. Kerrigan on reality show?
We were interested to read that former Illinois governor
Rod Blagojevich - he of the bad hair and federal corruption charges - will be appearing on "I'm a
Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here," NBC's "Survivor"-style reality show that will be filmed in Costa Rica in June. But we were even more interested to read that
Nancy Kerrigan will also be on the show. Or will she? The former Olympic figure skater, a Stoneham native, told a colleague of ours yesterday that she hasn't signed on the dotted line, and may not. On her way to Florida with husband
Jerry Solomon, Kerrigan said she was under the impression the show would include athletic pursuits. When she learned it might involve bugs and other creepy crawly things, she began having second thoughts.
Joel: Make it a Pabst
Billy Joel was hard to miss yesterday at the Sunset Grill & Tap, where he lunched with a group of friends. We're told the Piano Man, who plays a sold-out show at Gillette with
Elton John July 18, didn't sample any of the beers on the Sunset's 112 taps. Unbelievably, Joel opted for a Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Around town

Lourdes - will be here. . . .
