It was something like "American Idol" at Macy's yesterday afternoon. Locals gathered at the Downtown Crossing store to sing for the chance to win tickets to the 2009 Tony Awards. Cast members of "Spring Awakening" judged and performed at the event.
Teaming up to help
Enza Sambataro (above), also known as Mrs. Kevin Youkilis, and actress Danielle Franke (of "The Green River" and "Days of Our Lives") were special guests at last night's trunk show at the Newton children's store Mila Lilu. The benefit for Partners In Health had shoppers browsing through Laughing Out Loud apparel, a line for kids by designer (and former lawyer) Mila Cole.A path to 'The Road'
At last, the trailer for "The Road," the movie based on Cormac McCarthy's critically acclaimed 2006 novel, is hitting theaters this weekend. But even better, there's finally a release date for the film produced by Gloucester couple Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz. The trailer for "The Road," a postapocalyptic story starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron, will be screened starting today before "Angels & Demons." The movie opens Oct. 16. "The Road" is directed by Australian John Hillcoat, with music composed by countryman Nick Cave. (Cave worked on Hillcoat's movies "Ghosts of the Civil Dead" and "The Proposition," and Hillcoat directing a video for Cave's song "Babe I'm on Fire.") The Schwartzes, who run the Waltham-based PR firm Schwartz Communications, have other projects in the works, including a film based on Pete Takeda's nonfiction book "An Eye at the Top of the World" and a script by Paul Schrader.'Restless' finalists
Billerica bride-to-be Julie Rosse is hoping her soap opera habit pays off. Every day, she goes home for lunch so she can watch "The Young and the Restless" (don't judge). About a month and a half ago, she saw an ad for a Y&R "Wedding in Las Vegas Contest," which had soap actors Daniel Goddard and Christel Khalil (that's Cane and Lily, for those of you who care) choosing couples to compete for a free Vegas wedding. Rosse, 31, a graphic designer, entered herself and her fiancé, Brian Staats, 35, and recently learned that they were chosen as one of four finalists. Rosse told us that Staats is not a soap opera-type guy. That said, "He was all about winning a free wedding in Vegas." The winning couple will be decided by online voters at www.theyoungandtherestless.com/lasvegaswedding. You can weigh in until the end of May.Think:Kids supporters
Degrees of dedication
When Colette Phillips receives an honorary degree today from Mount Ida College, her boyfriend, actor Louis Gossett, Jr., won't be there. He'll be 6 miles away, receiving an honorary degree of his own and also delivering the commencement address at Wheelock College. Phillips, who heads up the multicultural marketing firm Colette Phillips Communications, told us she's sorry to miss her man's speech, but they're getting together afterward. Gossett, an Oscar winner for his role in "An Officer and a Gentleman," recently founded the Eracism Foundation, which promotes education and awareness of racism, ignorance, and apathy. Wheelock is partnering with the foundation to develop a diversity and enrichment curriculum that could be implemented around the country.Dushku's high hopes
Will hometown gal Eliza Dushku get to stay in her "Dollhouse"? At the moment it's unclear. The sci-fi series "Dollhouse," which comes from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon, hasn't been faring well in the ratings. Not only that, but Fox has decided to shelve this season's last episode and put it on a "Dollhouse" DVD, which will be released July 28. Dushku has been telling fans via Twitter that the network is discussing the fate of the show this week. "DOLLHOUSE talk's are goin' on~ it'd be an extravaganza bonanza to return 4 rnd 2!," Tweeted Duskhu, who has spent much of May on a Suffolk University trip with her professor mom, Judith. Indeed, it would be an extravaganza bonanza to see Dushku next season. Fans expect a Fox verdict next week.Love in first semester
"Ugly Betty" boy Eric Mabius makes the cover of the new Boston Common magazine. Inside, the actor reveals that he and his wife, Ivy, were in the same sex-ed class at Amherst Regional High School. "I literally used to have sex-ed with my future wife, which seems a little convenient, but it's absolutely true," he says. He remains a big fan of Western Massachusetts and plans to move back. "We're going to be going back there for the rest of our lives," he says. "Western Mass. has such a strong pull for us. It's just a unique part of the world.Looking out for women
First ladies Kitty Dukakis, Diane Patrick, and Angela Menino were all in the same room yesterday to support hopeFound's new initiative to help homeless women. The program at the Kitty Dukakis Treatment Center for Women aims to address not only sobriety but also the physical, social, spiritual, occupational, intellectual, and emotional issues involved in homelessness.© Copyright 2009 Globe Newspaper Company.
