'Rye' sequel blocked

Swedish author Fredrik Colting whose new book was promoted as a sequel to J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye’’ cannot publish it in the United States because it too closely mirrors Salinger’s classic without adequate parody or critique, a judge ruled Wednesday. US District Court Judge Deborah Batts issued her written ruling in Manhattan after considering arguments in a lawsuit brought by the 90-year-old Salinger, of Cornish, N.H., against the publishers of “60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye.’’ (AP)

Fawcett service held
Actor Ryan O’Neal led friends and family in a private funeral service on Tuesday for actress Farrah Fawcett, who died last week aged 62 after a long and public battle with cancer. O’Neal, the long-time companion of the “Charlie’s Angels’’ star, gave a reading at the service at Los Angeles Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. (Reuters)

Writer sues Fox News
Former Fox News entertainment writer Roger Friedman is suing his old bosses for more than $5 million after he was fired for reviewing a copy of Fox’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine’’ that was leaked on the Internet before the film’s official release. Friedman is seeking damages for libel and legal fees in a suit that names Fox as well as News Corp. and its chairman, Rupert Murdoch. (AP)
