Mark Wahlberg: likes baseball, loves golf. The hometown star, who is in town to film the Micky Ward biopic “The Fighter,’’ stopped by Fenway Park yesterday to throw out a ceremonial first pitch, but ditched the ballpark before the game even started to spend the day golfing at Andover Country Club. Wahlberg said he’d catch the Sox highlights on TV when he was done on the green. To be accurate, Wahlberg, a lefty, threw out two first pitches yesterday. His first attempt was high and wide, missing Dustin Pedroia altogether. The actor had predicted as much. “I’ll throw it out of the [expletive] park before I throw it too short,’’ he told us before walking onto the field. Boston-bred funny guy Mike O’Malley also threw out a ceremonial pitch yesterday - his went to David Ortiz. O’Malley, who’ll appear in the Matt Damon movie “The Informant!’’ this fall, stayed on to host Fenway’s postgame Picnic in the Park celebration. Other familiar faces at the ballpark yesterday included Foo Fighters manager John Silva, who flew to Boston after spending his July 4 with the band at the White House, “True Jackson, VP’’ producer Dan Kopelman, and “Star Trek’’ director J.J. Abrams, who sat in Tom Werner’s seat for the Seattle showdown. Abrams recently told the Globe that he and wife Katie McGrath, who went to Simmons College, are huge Red Sox fans. Perhaps that’s why his sci-fi series “Fringe’’ is set around the Hub.
A weekend to celebrate
VIPs at the July Fourth extravaganza on the Esplanade, besides Neil Diamond and host Craig Ferguson, included FBI director Robert S. Mueller III, Boston native Michael Chiklis, late of “The Shield,’’ and Amesbury-bred “Burn Notice’’ star Jeffrey Donovan with his girlfriend and fellow cast member, Moon Bloodgood. Chiklis explained somewhat awkwardly on WBZ that his next movie will be a stoner flick called “High School.’’ (Get it? High school.) Due out next year, it co-stars Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Adrien Brody. Not surprisingly, Chiklis plays the principal. . . . Cheers owner Tom Kershaw hosted his annual July Fourth party with his new wife, Janet Sharp. Guests included Reebok exec Paul Foster and news radio guy Peter Casey. Meanwhile, Brad Penny and Josh Beckett happily watched the fireworks from the roof of the Baseball Tavern on Boylston Street. (Penny also stopped by Game On! during the weekend for turkey tips.)Read the Names Blog at www.boston.com/namesblog. Names can be reached at names@globe.com or at 617-929-8253. ![]()
