Jackson Browne has settled a lawsuit and received an apology from Senator John McCain and the Republican Party over use of his song “Running on Empty’’ during last year’s presidential campaign. The settlement announced yesterday includes a pledge by the party not to use any musicians’ work without proper permission in future campaigns. Financial details of the settlement were not announced. Baldwin bankrupt
Actor Stephen Baldwin filed for bankruptcy in New York yesterday, according to a court document. The 43-year-old actor filed for Chapter 11 protection, claiming he owes more than $2.3 million and owns a New York property valued at only $1.1 million. His wife, Kennya Baldwin, also is named in the document. (Reuters)

Memorial cost probed
Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich said a probe of taxpayer costs tied to Michael Jackson’s memorial has “criminal aspects.’’ Trutanich told members of the City Council yesterday that investigators have interviewed witnesses and gathered evidence, and the probe “raises both civil and criminal aspects.’’ He provided no further details. Boyle talks fame
Susan Boyle, who became a global star with a show-stopping performance on “Britain’s Got Talent,’’ said in a television interview that her sudden fame was like a “demolition ball.’’ The interview, which will air today on NBC’s “Today,’’ was Boyle’s first TV interview since she became a global Internet and TV sensation. When the church volunteer from Scotland failed to win the final of “Britain’s Got Talent,’’ she became ill and was treated for exhaustion at a London clinic. (Reuters)

Rapper’s trial still on
A Louisiana judge has refused to postpone next month’s trial of rapper Corey “C-Murder’’ Miller, who is accused of killing a teenager at a New Orleans-area nightclub. Prosecutors wanted a delay so they could investigate a claim by another man that he killed the teenager. (AP)

Actor sentenced
A judge yesterday sentenced a cast member of the “Harry Potter’’ films to 120 hours of community service yesterday for growing marijuana. Jamie Waylett, 20, who plays school bully Vincent Crabbe in the movie franchise, pleaded guilty to producing the drug at a court hearing last week. Police found 10 marijuana plants growing in a bedroom at Waylett’s mother’s London house. (AP)

Bruce Lee bios get OK
Bruce Lee’s older sister and younger brother have authorized a Chinese company to make a series of biographical films about the late kung fu icon, saying they want to produce a historically accurate account of their brother’s life. It wasn’t immediately clear who will play Lee in the film series, which were authorized by Phoebe Lee and Robert Lee. (AP)
