Tom’s got a lot on his mind
Pats poster boy Tom Brady looks mighty beefcake on the cover of the new Details magazine, which comes out next week. But don’t let his handsome good looks fool you. The normally circumspect signal caller is downright philosophical in the accompanying article.
Writer Jonathan Miles met with Brady in New York this summer, and the QB talked about everything from football and fashion to his famous wife and fatherhood. Asked, for instance, about his complicated personal life - he has a son with Bridget Moynahan but is married to Gisele Bundchen - Brady has a lot to say.
“That’s not how you envisioned your life, that’s not how you envisioned having children, but it happens. . . . Life is not living in the suburbs with a white picket fence. That’s not life,’’ he insists. “Somehow our American culture has made it out that that’s what life needs to be and that if it’s not that, it’s all screwed up. It’s not. You go through life and you try the best you can.’’
It might surprise you to know Brady is mostly unbothered by the paparazzi, even when they pester him with inane questions and or snap him as his supermodel sweetheart is feeding him a morsel of food.
“It’s entertaining,’’ he says. “I don’t take myself very seriously. I’m not a person who defends myself very often. I kind of let my actions speak for me. So when people criticize me, and they should - that’s what you do as an athlete. You go out there, and that’s what happens. You deal with it and laugh with it and hope they sell a lot of newspapers. Because there’s going to be the next article the next day, and the next article the next day.’’
Almost as famous for his fashion sense as his skills on the football field, the Super Bowl champ says style is important to him.
“Maybe my creativity comes out a little when I dress,’’ he says. “I’m not a very creative person, you know? I’m not really an art person. I’m not a great reader or writer or artist or musician. Hopefully I encourage my teammates, a little bit, to get their wives and girlfriends excited when they walk through the door.’’
Bundchen was present for at least part of the interview, and chimes in as Brady talks about their first meeting, on a blind date at a restaurant in New York that’s now closed. “This friend told me he knew a girl version of me,’’ says the QB. To which Gisele replies, “And he said to me he’d found a boy version of me.’’
If Bundchen was pregnant at the time of the interview, Brady doesn’t mention it. But he does talk about his desire to have a big family, something Bundchen has also said in the past.
“I want a lot of kids,’’ he says. “I’d love four or five. We’ll see. It’s not always my decision.’’
Finally, talking about his life - the fame, the fortune, the glamorous wife, the three Super Bowl trophies - Brady sounds remarkably unfazed.
“We’re all here, man, we’re all sharing the same air. Everyone wants to look at [me] and say, ‘Well, if I had that, I’d really be happy.’ But happiness is really about how you feel yourself and if you’re satisfied with yourself. I wish everybody happiness, man. And fulfillment in life. You don’t need to play football to have that. At least I don’t think that’s what was going though the creator’s mind when we were created.’’
