Hometown humor
Joey McIntyre spends most of the year touring these days, but the guy still knows his hometown wicked good. The youngest New Kid on the Block (inset) stars in a hilarious and profane FunnyOrDie.com video called “Ma Men’’ - a “Mad Men’’ parody. In the vid, the Don Draper-types at fictional ad company Sterling Cooper are Red Sox T-shirt-wearing townies who must come up with a campaign for their big new client, “Fenway Paaahk.’’ The skit, which was written by Boston-bred funny gal Jamie Denbo and costars hometowner Nate Corddry, includes mentions of Ted Williams and Kelly’s Roast Beef, with ridiculous footage of the ad guys sipping Budweisers in front of boxes of Dunkin’ Munchkins. The skit even manages to include a Dana Barros Celtics jersey. McIntrye has been getting raves from fans about the profanity-drenched bit - even though it’s less than flattering to Bostonians, to put it mildly. McIntrye said on Twitter, of the piece, “Glad you like the skit!!! Let’s get viral:) vote funny!!!! great actors in that piece.’’ And of course: “Go Sawx!!!’’Return to sender
Did a secret admirer send Tom Brady an armload of flowers to thank him for his fourth-quarter heroics? A Winston Flowers truck pulled up early yesterday outside the Beacon Street building the QB shares with Gisele Bundchen. The driver rang the buzzer and announced: “For Tom Brady.’’ According to a neighbor, the delivery man had a brief conversation over the intercom before returning to his truck - with the tray of flowers in hand - and drove away.Over the plate
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield had lunch at Joe’s American Bar & Grill in Hanover yesterday with 24 winners of a contest run by the New England Dairy Promotion Board, Stop & Shop, and Mix 104.1. . . . Neutral Milk Hotel founder Jeff Mangum was in the audience at the Ciculatory System show at the Cambridge YMCA.‘Town’ in the Square; extras wait UpStairs
The Boston-based bank robber movie “The Town’’ - which has already filmed in Charlestown, Dorchester, and Fenway Park - made its way to Harvard Square yesterday. Director and star Ben Affleck and his crew descended on Winthrop Park at about 6 a.m. to film outdoor scenes in front of Grendel’s Den and UpStairs on the Square. According to passersby, some of whom were lucky enough to get pictures of our hometown star in action, Affleck spent most of the afternoon working with costars Rebecca Hall, of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,’’ and Blake Lively, of “Gossip Girl.’’ Most of the filming took place outside, but local extras waited inside UpStairs on the Square until they were needed. UpStairs owner Mary-Catherine Deibel said she had empathy for the extras, who sat around patiently, hoping they’d make it into a scene. Two years ago, when the Dane Cook-Kate Hudson comedy “My Best Friend’s Girl’’ was shot around Boston, Deibel and publicist Chris Haynes waited in the extras line hoping to get cast as wedding planners. “I waited like 13 hours and then was dismissed,’’ Deibel said, laughing. “They took one look at me and they were like, ‘Get out of here.’ It was like high school.’’ Affleck is said to be filming more of “The Town’’ around the Fenway later this week. The movie is an adaptation of local author Chuck Hogan’s thriller “Prince of Thieves.’’Papi doubles up on good deeds
Big Papi yesterday announced a partnership between the David Ortiz Children’s Fund and Massachusetts General Hospital. (To date, Ortiz’s foundation has raised more than $1 million for critically ill children in New England and the Dominican Republic.) The slugger also announced the dates of the David Ortiz Charity Golf Classic, which takes place Dec. 3-6 at Cap Cana in the D.R. The Gibson guitar in the photo will be among the items auctioned off at the event.Zohn’s cancer returns
Ethan Zohn, the “Survivor: Africa’’ winner from Lexington, is still battling cancer, according to People magazine. Zohn told People earlier this week that he had hoped his Hodgkin’s lymphoma had disappeared after three months of chemotherapy, but he found out in late August that it had returned. “I was off chemo. I was running up to seven miles in preparation for November’s New York City Marathon,’’ Zohn told People. “I was happy, I was going out. I went up to Boston to see the family and was feeling great.’’ People reports that Zohn, 35, and his doctors have a new treatment plan for the disease.Big day for McKnight
The Dimmock Center has announced that Brian McKnight will headline its annual Steppin’ Out fund-raiser, which will be held Nov. 7 at the Westin Boston Waterfront. Past performers at the black-tie event include Lalah Hathaway, Roberta Flack, and George Benson.Film role up for bids
Kevin James, Donnie Wahlberg, and you together on the big screen? Oddly enough, it’s possible. The Franklin Park Zoo, where James is filming his new comedy, “The Zookeeper,’’ is auctioning off a walk-on role to benefit Zoo New England. It’s a nonspeaking role, so don’t expect it to launch your film career. Filming for the walk-on scene is scheduled for Friday. The starting bid is $500. You can find the auction at www.franklinparkzoo.org.Anniversary party
Flacktastic Marlo Fogelman celebrated the fifth anniversary of her marlo marketing/communication with a bash at Eastern Standard. Guests included Phoenix publisher Stephen Mindich, Cartier’s Cedric Tonello, SalonCapri’s Nick and Amy Penna, restaurateur Babak Bina, Michael Baker of Baker’s Best, director Dave McLaughlin, Style Boston’s Eric Levin, Boldfacers founder Lisa Pierpont, attorney Mark Robinson, grande dame of good times Doris Yaffee, and Mary Chiochios of the Massachusetts Film Office. . . . The night after leading the singalong at John Henry’s 60th birthday party, Peter Wolf was back at it. The J. Geils frontman joined nightlife nabob Patrick Lyons and Sox chairman Tom Werner at Sonsie and then the crew headed to Scampo for dinner. He got Cosmo’s vote
As he collects signatures for his longshot bid to succeed Ted Kennedy, Republican Scott Brown is talking up his resume: Tufts alum, lawyer, state senator, and family man. (His wife of nearly 25 years is Channel 5’s Gail Huff.) But Brown’s bio includes something uncommon among candidates for the US Senate: “America’s sexiest man.’’ That’s right, Brown was so voted by the folks at Cosmopolitan magazine in 1982 when he was a first-year law student at Boston College. The state senator from Wrentham is pictured nude in the 1982 issue of the magazine, strategically using a hand to keep the close-up tasteful. (Here’s a somewhat tamer pic from the same spread.) Former Mitt Romney aide Eric Fehrnstrom, who’s advising Brown, told us yesterday the Cosmo photos surface periodically. “I’ve seen the L Street Brownies reveal more flesh during their dip on New Year’s Day,’’ said Fehrnstrom. “Scott was 22 years old. He was young and carefree. Now he’s 50, needs glasses to read, and his hair is turning gray. This is one of the few remaining mementos of his youth.’’Read the Names Blog at www.boston.com/namesblog.
