PETA-loving Pretender Chrissie Hynde is protesting a product sold by the Merrimack, N.H.-based Brookstone. The rocker is railing against the store’s Frog-O-Sphere, a plastic aquarium containing aquatic frogs, a bamboo plant, and a snail. “Foot massagers and grill equipment can live quite happily in boxes; animals cannot,’’ Hynde wrote in a letter to Brookstone CEO Philip Roizin. “Customers have reported that the animals are languishing on store shelves and that they often die slow, miserable deaths.’’ Calls to Brookstone’s headquarters were not returned.Around town

Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr is apparently OK after crashing his car into a telephone pole in Wellesley at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. According to police, the 57-year-old scribe and WRKO talk-show host was driving south on Wellesley Avenue, between Oakland and Forest streets, when his 2004 Acura crossed into the oncoming lane, hit a curb, and slammed into a telephone pole. Wellesley Police Sergeant Marie Cleary said Carr refused medical treatment and the car had to be towed. (The pole was split in half.) Carr, who likes to poke fun at driving mishaps involving the elderly and pol Patrick Kennedy, was cited for a marked-lane violation. “There were no signs of alcohol or anything suspicious of that nature,’’ Cleary told us yesterday. “It’s a windy road there. I’m not sure if he was distracted for a moment.’’ Cops couldn’t say whether Carr was talking on a cellphone or texting at the time of the accident. One of our spies caught Jon Hamm buying two copies of “Mad Men’’ on DVD at the Borders on Boylston Street over the weekend. “You’ve got me in a dork moment,’’ Hamm said, once he realized he’d been spotted buying his own show. For the record, Hamm said the DVDs were gifts. No word on why Hamm can’t get copies of “Mad Men’’ for free, but we give him credit for stimulating the local economy while he’s in the Hub. Hamm, who plays Don Draper on the AMC hit “Mad Men,’’ is in Boston to costar in Ben Affleck’s bank robber thriller “The Town’’ based on Chuck Hogan’s novel “Prince of Thieves.’’ Hamm plays an FBI agent out to get Affleck and his gang. The cast spent much of last week filming scenes around Fenway Park.
