The two child stars of “Slumdog Millionaire’’ are at risk of losing their monthly stipend and their trust fund if they don’t attend school more regularly, a trustee for the fund said yesterday. Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 11, and Rubina Ali, 10, shot to fame after starring in the Oscar-winning movie. But these days Azharuddin is only showing up at school 37 percent of the time, and Rubina has only a 27 percent attendance rate, the trustee said. “It’s pathetic,’’ said Noshir Dadrawala, who helps administer the Jai Ho trust established by the filmmakers to provide an education, living allowance, and housing for the young stars, who both grew up in Mumbai’s shantytowns. “They are constantly going to Paris and Cochin and Chennai. That’s fine, but go over the weekend, not at the sacrifice of school.’’ “Slumdog’’ director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson said in a statement that the children’s families “need to honor their part of the bargain.’’ (AP)

Danson calls for limits on overfishing
Actor Ted Danson yesterday called for tough limits on subsidies that are promoting overfishing around the globe. In an interview, the actor said the World Trade Organization needs to address the problem of boats fishing on the high seas longer and farther away from port thanks to billions of dollars in annual government handouts. The subsidies are a major reason why 80 percent of the world’s fisheries are threatened, and why the industry is bringing in smaller catches despite the bigger fleets, Danson said. “You are subsidizing the boats to do exactly the wrong thing,’’ Danson said at the WTO’s Geneva headquarters. “One of the fastest ways to deal with this problem is to take boats off the water. If you cut subsidies, you are going to cut their ability to do the wrong thing.’’ (AP)

Jon in hot water with new girlfriend
Jon Gosselin’s post-Kate relationship isn’t going too well - and that’s according to his new girlfriend. Hailey Glassman told the syndicated TV magazine show “The Insider’’ that the one-time reality TV dad takes out his anger on her. She says he throws “mantrums.’’ In a statement to the show, Gosselin said he regretted “any pain that my actions have caused her’’ and that he was committed to making things right with Glassman, his ex-wife, and kids. Gosselin, who filed for divorce from wife Kate in June, was part of the TLC show “Jon & Kate Plus Eight.’’ (AP)
