The premise of Rob Corddry’s new movie,“Hot Tub Time Machine,’ sounds far-fetched — four guys travel back to 1986 after a night of heavy drinking in a hot tub — but it’s a true story. At least, according to Corddry. “Funny enough, me and my buddies actually had a hot tub time machine,’’ says the graduate of Weymouth North High School and UMass. “It’s a little-known secret that Hitler controlled the world until 1986, when me and my buddies went back and made sure he died in 1945.’’ “Hot Tub Time Machine,’’ which opens today, costars John Cusack, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke, with cameos by Chevy Chase, Crispin Glover, and William Zabka. “It’s a little bit of everything,’’ Corddry told us. “It’s a silly, raunchy throwback of a comedy, but it’s also got a really smart, meta, postmodern aspect to it.’’ As anyone who watched him on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart’’ knows, Corddry is very funny and smart. So why isn’t he a bigger star? “Whatever I’ve done, whether it’s traveling around with a small Shakespeare company making $350 a week, or booking commercials, or doing improv with Upright Citizens Brigade, I’ve completely accepted that it was the thing I should be doing.’’ Next up is the TV hospital drama spoof called “Childrens’ Hospital,’’ which will air on the Adult Swim network in July. (It was formerly a Web series.) Corddry writes, directs, and stars on the show, and the cast includes Megan Mullally, Malin Akerman, Henry Winkler, and Jon Hamm, who makes a guest appearance. There’s buzz about the show, which makes it easy to recruit actors. Said Corddry: “Ernie Hudson was on the set the other day and someone asked how he got on the show, and he said, ‘I didn’t want to do it, but my agent said it’s a hip show.’ ’’

After 30 years, Channel 5 anchor and reporter Mary Richardson announced yesterday she’s leaving the station. The longtime cohost of “Chronicle’’ said she’s not retiring, but added she isn’t sure yet what’s next. “I am looking forward to the possibilities ahead — and am thrilled about my first summer off since college,’’ Richardson said in a statement. “ ‘Chronicle’ has been a dream job, but it is time to do something different.’’ She started at “Chronicle’’ in 1984 alongside Peter Mehegan. (She currently cohosts with Anthony Everett.) With Richardson as co-anchor, “Chronicle’’ has won two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards, several national Gabriel Awards and numerous local Emmys. . . . Meanwhile, the contract of Channel 4 chief meteorologist Ken Barlow is not being renewed. Barlow has been with the CBS affiliate since 2006. Station spokeswoman Ro Dooley-Webster would only say, “We thank [Barlow] for his contributions and wish him all the best with his future endeavors.’’

Comedian Edie McClurg will be in Boston this weekend for the Women in Comedy Festival. Edie who? McClurg was Mrs. Poole in “The Hogan Family’’ and the secretary in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,’’ who says of Matthew Broderick’s character: “The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wasteoids, dweebies . . . they all adore him. They think he’s a righteous dude.’’ McClurg told us a little-known fact about the famous line — “righteous dude’’ was her idea. “Because I like the Chicago accent,’’ she said, “I thought it would be fun to say, ‘They think he’s a righteous dude.’ McClurg has been in dozens of films and TV shows since “Ferris,’’ but that’s the role people remember. (She’s also familiar for her memorable turn with Steve Martin in “Planes, Trains & Automobiles,’’ and as the girl in the big glasses who taunts Sissy Spacek in “Carrie.’’) This weekend, McClurg said she’ll do what she does best — improvising. And then it’s off to Martha’s Vineyard with a few of her funny friends.

Donnie Wahlberg and Tom Brady’s ex Bridget Moynahan got reacquainted on the set of “Reagan’s Law’’ during a shoot in Toronto this week. In the CBS series, Wahlberg plays a New York City cop whose sister, played by Moynahan, is a single mom and the city’s assistant district attorney. Wahlberg and Moynahan previously shot a pilot called “Bunker Hill.’’ No word on if, or when, we’ll ever see that.

Former Patriot Tedy Bruschi and his wife, Heidi, were among the guests at this week’s party celebrating the opening of Nordstrom at the South Shore Plaza. More than 1,200 people attended the shindig, which was a fund-raiser for the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. . . . Tower of Power rocked the Wilbur Theatre the other night, and Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer was there to enjoy the show. . . . Ayla Brown, chef Ken Oringer, Dress for Success’s Kim Todd, Elan Sassoon of Mizu, and Bruin Andrew Ference were at the Mandarin Oriental hotel the other night celebrating the Improper Bostonian’s “Best Of’’ issue.

Pats linebacker Jerod Mayo and some of his teammates took over Kings Dedham last night for a charity bowling event. Mayo Bowl — first there was Nomar Bowl and then Beckett Bowl — saw the strongmen bowling strikes for Pitching in for Kids, a nonprofit that provides grants for children. Among the Pats players expected were Eric Alexander, Julian Edelman, Gary Guyton, Pierre Woods, Brandon Meriweather, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Shawn Crable, Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer, Matthew Slater, James Sanders, Tully Banta-Cain, and Brian Hoyer. Also on the list were Troy Brown and Andre Tippett, and assistant coach Pepper Johnson.
