VINEYARD HAVEN — All those books President Obama bought the other day? He got a chance to read them yesterday as the weather on the Rock turned dreary, forcing the vacationing first family to stay indoors much of the time.
When the president did finally venture out in the afternoon, it wasn’t to take a dip in the ocean or play a windy round of golf. Instead, POTUS and a phalanx of Secret Service left Blue Heron Farm and headed to Oak Bluffs School to shoot a few hoops with two buddies, UBS banker Robert Wolf and Chicago health care adviser Dr. Eric Whitaker.
Of course, the steady rain that fell throughout the day didn’t discourage less-well-known vacationers on the island, many of whom were swaddled in Gore-Tex, wandering and window-shopping in Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, and Vineyard Haven. Something tells us it was a banner day for The Black Dog. (Among famous folks, we’re told designer Kenneth Cole had dinner the other night at the Blue Canoe in Vineyard Haven, and actress Meg Ryan dined at L’Etoile in Edgartown.)
Last night, the president dined at Sweet Life Cafe in Oak Bluffs, where he and the first lady also ate last summer. Little is known about Obama’s plans for the week, though there’s speculation that he may pay a visit to the home of his friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett and attend a dinner party Thursday at the home of Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus Development Corp. (Also Thursday, there’s an NAACP event to which Obama is invited.)
The threat of nasty weather caused organizers to postpone Sunday’s second annual Dog Parade in Oak Bluffs. The event, which had been billed as a “Welcome Back, Bo’’ parade, will be held next weekend instead, re-dubbed a “Farewell, Bo’’ parade. Bo is the Obamas’ Portuguese water dog.
A few hundred people did stop by photographer Peter Simon’s Vineyard Haven gallery Sunday for the opening of an exhibit of Obama pictures shot by Callie Shell, a photographer for Time. Shell didn’t make the scene, but we did run into Jay Gould, owner of the Flatbread Company, which just opened a restaurant, its 10th, on the island. Gould told us actor Bill Murray was in the other night with a party of 15.
Among the many photos lining the walls of Simon’s gallery — there’s Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, Mick Jagger, and Simon’s sister, Carly, to name just a few — there’s a shot of Lady Gaga lying on the floor smeared with what looks like blood. Simon told us that Gaga’s manager, Troy Carter, had been into the store earlier this summer and bought several pictures. Before leaving, he offered Simon a backstage pass to Lady G’s show at the TD Garden, and Simon accepted.
American Idol favorite Adam Lambert ate at Tremont 647 while he was in town for a show at the South Shore Music Circus over the weekend. He tried the lobster mac n cheese, the shrimp risotto, and the smore brownie, and posed for a pic with chef Andy Husbands (right).
Jessica Biel partied with old friends from Tufts University over the weekend. She was spotted going into Charleys on Newbury Street and hanging with pals at a bachelorette party at Cuffs at the Back Bay Hotel. In last months issue of Glamour, Biel said she had a tough time leaving her friends at Tufts behind when she quit school to pursue her career. I do still have a desire, a pang in my heart, when I think about it and the fact that I didnt spend my four years with my friends, she said in the mag. I didnt stay with my friend Hayden in our apartment. I bailed and she ended up living with some random people. Sounds like theyve forgiven her. . . . Harry Connick Jr. was spotted at Chatham Cookware over the weekend. . . . Singer and sometimes-reality-star Ryan Cabrera spent Sunday night at Shrine at the
Tell your daughters that if they want to impress Justin Bieber, they should get themselves into an Ivy League school. Bieber recently told the Sun in the UK that his celebrity crush is Brown University student and Harry Potter star Emma Watson. I love the fact she is one of the biggest female movie stars, but has chosen to go back to college. It shows she is really grounded and normal, Bieber said, adding that he would like to take Watson out to dinner.
Curt and Shonda Schilling hosted a party at Kings Dedham to benefit their SHADE Foundation, which raises money to fight skin cancer. The bowling party raised more than $20,000 for the cause. Read the Names blog at www.boston.com/namesblog. Names can be reached at names@globe.com or at 617-929-8253.
