“Girlfriend,’’ the local movie that was a hit at the Toronto International Film Festival, has been snatched up by the distribution company Hannover House, which plans a theatrical release by the end of the year. Director Justin Lerner shot the movie around his hometown of Wayland last year. It stars Evan Sneider as a man with Down syndrome who pursues his childhood crush, played by Shannon Woodward of the new Fox comedy “Raising Hope.’’ Costars include Amanda Plummer and “Twilight’’ actor Jackson Rathbone. Wayland-ites will notice when the film comes out that it features Caraway’s Deli, a favorite town haunt that closed this year. Co-owner Michael Franklin, of Franklin Caterers, said he and his business partner/wife, Joan, are thrilled that the old place will have new life on screen. Not only have the Franklins known Lerner since the director was a kid, but Franklin also became a fan of Plummer when she filmed at Caraway’s last year. “She was wonderful. I’m familiar with her father [Christopher Plummer] and her mother [Tammy Grimes]. I am of that age.’’ Franklin said that after meeting Plummer, he researched her online and was surprised to find out that her actress-mother Grimes is a Massachusetts native — born in Lynn and a graduate of Beaver Country Day School.
