Grads get an earful
Matt Lauer’s new “Today’’ co-anchor, Ann Curry, was the punchline of Time editor Richard Stengel’s commencement speech at Wheaton College over the weekend. Last year, when Curry served as graduation speaker, she rattled off a list of famous Wheaton grads, including Billy Graham and horror director Wes Craven. Only problem was — those guys graduated from the Wheaton College in Illinois, not the one in Norton, Mass. When Stengel took the podium on Saturday, he told graduates that in preparation for his speech, he Googled Ann Curry to get advice, and that “she was weirdly uninformed about what I wanted to talk about, and I told her so. And she said, ‘Well, I’m Ann Curry from Springfield, Illinois. I’m an insurance claims adjuster.’ Well, imagine my surprise. The wrong Ann Curry.’’ After getting a good laugh, Stengel went on to say, “By the way, she gave a great speech last year. And she is a friend of mine.’’ . . . Curry’s former colleague Katie Couric gave Boston University’s commencement speech yesterday. Graduates live tweeted her address and raved about her one-liners, which poked fun at former BU student Howard Stern, her many naysayers, and Boston College, which she joked was her safety school. . . . Elsewhere, Jeff Glor of “The Early Show’’ spoke yesterday at Suffolk University’s commencement for undergrads.
