No comment on Whitey
Wondering what Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, and Matt Damon thought about the dramatic capture of Whitey Bulger? We did, too, but the stars of “The Departed’’ — the Martin Scorsese movie loosely based on the Bulger saga — all declined our invitation yesterday to chat about the arrest of the 81-year-old gangster and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig. Likewise, Scorsese said no, and Bay State-bred screenwriter William Monahan, who won an Oscar for his treatment of the Whitey-esque tale, didn’t even respond to our e-mail. Oh well. Interestingly, “The Departed’’ was produced by Brit Graham King, whose GK Films offices are located at 1411 5th St. in Santa Monica, just a few blocks from 1012 3rd St., the address of the apartment complex where Whitey and Greig had lived for 15 years. Weird, right? And King’s fascination didn’t end with “The Departed.’’ He’s currently working with “Prince of Thieves’’ author Chuck Hogan on a crime drama centered on Whitey’s Winter Hill Gang and its chief enforcer John Martorano. Asked if Bulger figures prominently in the script, Hogan said yes. “He’s a big part of the project, but not the focus,’’ he said.
