The name of the game
The Lowell Spinners are campaigning hard for outfielder Seth Schwindenhammer to win this year’s Minor League Baseball “Minors Moniker Madness’’ competition. Last year, Schwindenhammer - who’s known as “Hammer’’ - beat out almost all of the other ridiculously named players in the contest but lost out to Rowdy Hardy, who plays for the Gwinnett Braves. The first round of this year’s bracket competition runs through the weekend, and in Round 1, our Hammer faces off against Hardy’s teammate Yohan Flande. Why do so many minor league ballplayers have such memorable monikers? Your guess is as good as ours - or Boof Bonser’s (he plays for the Buffalo Bisons).
