Rhode Islander Richard Hatch, who won the first season of “Survivor,’’ claims that he needs a court-appointed lawyer because he’s destitute, according to the Associated Press. Hatch, who was convicted of failing to pay taxes on his $1 million in reality show winnings, and then returned to jail for not meeting the terms of his release, is appealing his nine-month sentence to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. According to the AP, US Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond has recommended that Hatch be denied a court-appointed lawyer.
