What with baseball season in full swing, and the Patriots about to play meaningful games, we kind of lost sight of the Stanley Cup. Until, that is, we saw the video of Michael Ryder putting Lord Stanley’s silver chalice on a table in Newfoundland, and having the Cup topple over and hit the ground. “The first ding of the day,’’ someone says as Ryder and others scramble to pick it up. Relax. It’s not the first time the Cup has been dropped or otherwise defaced. In ’08, Red Wing Kris Draper told reporters that his newborn daughter went to the bathroom in the trophy. We’re wondering if Bruin Brad Marchand knew that when, on Monday, he ate cereal out of the Cup in his hometown of Halifax.
