Musician Adam Yauch, of the Beastie Boys, attended the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures awards gala in New York in 2010.

Adam Yauch, one-third of the seminal hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, died on May 4. While the rapper known as MCA had been battling cancer, an official cause of death has not been revealed.

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, who co-founded the Beastie's first label Def Jam, informed The Associated Press of Yauch's death. Simmons's website Global Grind was also the first to report the news.

After a storied 20-year-plus career in music, the Beasties were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

Celebrities took to Twitter to express their sadness over the death of the game-changing MC.
