Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, may be basking in the glory of her newly-unveiled baby bump, but author Hilary Mantel's scathing attack on the young royal is making headlines as well. During a talk for London Review of Books' Winter Lectures, the 60-year-old Man Booker Prize winner slammed the former Middleton as "painfully thin ... a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own, entirely defined by what she wore ... her only point and purpose being to give birth."

The speech, which was first heard during the British Museum earlier this month, was met with a front page Daily Mail piece on Tuesday that fired back, calling it "an astonishing and venomous attack on the Duchess of Cambridge." The piece in print ran with the headline: "A plastic princess designed to breed."

British Prime Minister David Cameron called Mantel's comments "completely misguided and completely wrong," but the Royal office has declined to comment, according to The Washington Post.

What do you think of Mantel's speech?
