Though he tried to hold back, legendary actor Robert De Niro broke down this week on Katie Couric's show "Katie."

De Niro, costar Bradley Cooper, and director David Russell were discussing their movie "Silver Linings Playbook." Couric asked De Niro if he felt more responsibility playing a role that hits close to home for the director -- the movie deals with bipolar disorder and Russell's son suffers from it.

"I don't like to get emotional," De Niro told Couric after fighting to compose himself. "But I know what he goes through."

Cooper seemed to get emotional, too. He patted De Niro's back before bowing his own head and covering his face with his hands.

De Niro's father, who passed away in 1993, was thought to be bipolar, reports nypost.com.
