The paucity of airplay devoted to female musicians isnt something that deprives Go! of a nights sleep, but if it did, wed be awfully grateful for Anngelle Wood, a DJ at WFNX-FM (107.1). Last year,Wood started the Rising Tide music series, which puts musical acts with women as band members onstage. Its a lush, lovely array on tap tonight at the Lizard Lounge, with Heidi Saperstein headlining. Theres something eerie about her new CD, Zara -- maybe its all those minor chords on her guitar. Also on the bill: Lady of Spain, a new fourmember group with a Sonic Youth vibe; the Drakes Laura Ponce; and the shoe-gazer sounds of Plumerai. Singer-songwriter Cat Sutherland opens at 9. Tickets $7. 1667 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, 617-547-0759.
KISS AND TELL Most of us have heard The Manhattans without actually hearing of them. They ruled the '70s with across-the-charts hits, "Shining Star" and "Kiss and Say Goodbye" (which came out at a time when Go! didn't have any use for kisses except from the family dog). But we digress, and anyway, these rhythm and bluesmen deserve to be equally known for their electrifying, energizing shows. We guess there'll be a whole lot of shaking going on at Scullers tonight, the second performance of their two-night gig. Tickets $30; with dinner $68. Tonight at 8 and 10:30. 400 Soldiers Field Road, 617-562-4111.
SIGHTS
TOUGH LOVE Whilst Go! worked to eliminate unsightly tan lines, playwright Jeffrey Sweet spent the summer putting the spit and polish on a steamy new play, "Immoral Imperatives," which is in the midst of a two-week run at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater. This comedy of manners (or lack thereof) stars Malachi Throne as Hank, a retired professor who moves to the Florida Keys with his young wife, Terri, played by Laura Esterman. He's impotent, she's randy, and the proposition that she employ Hank's old friend Dale as a gigolo gets further complicated when Dale's ex arrives on the scene. (Dale is played by W.T. Martin and the ex, Liz, by Tanya Clarke.) And you thought Wellfleet in September was for oysters. At 8 p.m. Tickets $23-$25. Kendrick Avenue at Wellfleet Town Pier, Wellfleet, 508-349-6835.
ARTY PARTIES With open studios and new exhibits going on in the South End, you could spend a lot of timeogling art without crossing the Charles River. Spread the joy, Go! always says, starting with the Windows Art Project in Somerville's Union Square. This year's theme is "Play," and from the looks of some of the whimsy on display in the windows of various Somerville establishments, the artists did just that. (Rottweiler in an Elvis coat, anyone?) An artists' reception is happening from 3 to 6 p.m. today, with group art tours, performance art, and music from three bands: the dreamy-sounding Skating Club, art rockers 27, and the Young, Sexy Assassins. While you're in the 'hood, check out minimalist Dan O'Kane's work at the Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge; the opening reception is today from 3 to 6. O'Kane is into abstractions of the wide-open skies he grew up with in Nebraska. Both opening parties are free. Union Square, Somerville, 617-625-6600. Zeitgeist Gallery, 1353 Cambridge St., Cambridge, 617-876-6060.
BITES
DEATH BY DIM SUM The pu pu platter at Pho Republique in the South End is the mother of all appetizers. This large plate of dim sum, complete with peanut and soy dipping sauces, is something we've learned to treat with respect. The selection varies but usually includes four spareribs, two Vietnamese spring rolls, and a pair of fried shrimp and sweet potato "nests" that you wrap in lettuce. A half-dozen wild mushroom wontons and some crab rangoon rounds out the selection, and it all goes down swell with a tumbler of mango margarita or a pomegranate martini. Nibbling away in this sexy room drenched in red light, we couldn't be more content. And although Go! frowns on appetizers that vanquish rather than stimulate our appetite, the array of tastes and textures on this plate are not easy to resist, especially for $25. How big is it? So big that when you start in, the staff waits to see how you'll do before placing your entree orders. According to our favorite waitress, Tara, the odds are very good that the entrees will have to be canceled. 1415 Washington St., South End, 617-262-0005.
Events can always be canceled, rescheduled, or sold out; call to confirm. Go! can be reached at go@globe.com or by calling 617-929-8257. ![]()
