Scary movies

Halloween is on the way, and you know if the Museum of Fine Arts is involved, the film won't be the greatest works of Freddie and Jason. Nope, the MFA folks reach back to the classics for the 1919 German silent film ''Eerie Stories" (below), the first horror film ever made. To spice things up, there's live accompaniment by Boston Pops pianist Bob Winter. At 7:45 p.m. Tickets: $9.

465 Huntington Ave., 617-267-9300.

Readings

Three short-story authors who have been -- as the press release notes -- ''slathered with literary acclaim" read from their works at Brookline Booksmith tonight at 7. They are Merrill Feitell (''Here Beneath Low-Flying Planes)," David Means (''The Secret Goldfish"), and Barbara Sutton (''The Send-Away Girl"). Free.

279 Harvard St., Brookline, 617-566-6660.
