The Colonnade's rooftop pool

The sound of gleeful splashing and the smell of coconut oil are two quintessential summertime delights that are hard to find in the city. But the Colonnade Hotel's rooftop pool, which reopened for the season during Memorial Day weekend, offers an elegant oasis in Back Bay. Hotel guests can enjoy a complimentary dip, while day trippers pay $40, which includes use of the pool, showers, changing room, and a towel. It may be something of a splurge, but for those without a car -- or who want to unwind without facing traffic -- it's a convenient spot for languid lounging. The 12th floor space was refurbished last year, and features a French-influenced menu amid soothing tropical colors. Snack on Caribbean shrimp or a tuna nicoise sandwich, or dig into quiche or steak frites. Tropical drinks include the Pacific Navel, with Midori melon liqueur and pina colada mix, or the Caribbean Blue Passion, with Malibu passion fruit rum, blue Curacao, and pineapple juice. They're delicious and refreshing, just like summer should be.
