Shut-eye instead of the red-eye

Is it really December already? Judging by the oversized inflatable snowman in our neighbor's yard, we would have to -- unfortunately -- say yes. Not to be a Scrooge, but in some regards, the holidays are a lot more trouble than they're worth.

Take travel, for example. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, travel increases by about one-fourth during the holidays. That means more screaming children, more frantic passengers, and more frustration when taking to the skies. Factor in the wacky weather and you've got yourself a chaotic cocktail with a twist of bah-humbug -- especially if you wind up stuck in an airport overnight.

We believe in turning negatives into positives, however. And if you happen to find yourself tucked in between your suitcases, consider Donna McSherry's advice from the Budget Traveller's Guide to Sleeping in Airports.

Her tips cover a lot of ground, from what to pack in an "emergency airport survival kit" to the important differences between comfortable sleeping spaces at arrival and departure gates. As an experienced budget traveler, McSherry knows how to rough it and, more importantly, she appreciates the level of absurdity an airport slumber party can entail.

Also on the site are more than 4,600 user-submitted testimonials on various airports the world over. Logan is there, too -- it even was a runner-up for the site's Poopy Airport Award. There are also comics, photos, and airport headlines.

Sleeping in a terminal isn't exactly ideal, of course, but at least you can take the money you saved on a hotel and put it toward spreading that holiday cheer we hear so much about.
