Get tips on what's hot this weekend. Sidekick's Meredith Goldstein was online Thursday, April 19, at 11 a.m. to dish about what's hot around the Hub.
The transcript follows.
Meredith_Goldstein: Hi everybody, its Meredith with Sidekick. Lets chat about the weekend. Supposedly, there will be sun.
lee__Guest_: what is there to do today with a 17 and 15 y/o?
Meredith_Goldstein: Hi Lee. Laser Metallica at the Museum of Science at 5:30?
spencer__Guest_: whats the best thing to do for a date in boston? Resturants that are hot?
Meredith_Goldstein: This depends on your budget and taste. But if were talking first date, sometimes its nice to have an activity to break the ice. We just got word that Mantra is hosting martini classes on Tuesdays. So you can take your date to the swanky spot and learn to make drinks, consume them, etc. Productive and romantic. The classes run from 5 to 7 and are $20.
Chuck__Guest_: So what are you thoughts about whats going on down on Lansdowne St. these days?
Meredith_Goldstein: As long as theres a sausage stand open late, I can take change. I like the idea of more places to consume real meals on Lansdowne, which seems to be on the neighborhood agenda for the future. Lansdowne Street, I think, will always be a bit sticky (I mean that in a good way) no matter what changes are made. There will always be the Cask. There will always be house music down the street.
jojo__Guest_: What are you planning to attend this weekend?
Meredith_Goldstein: I have some birthday activities for friends this weekend, but if my days were clear, Id see Guster (it is our duty to support local bands, even after theyre famous), I would go to the Cambridge Science Festival on Saturday, and I would stop by the Legends of Style party tomorrow night at the Boston Center for the Arts: http://www.legendsofstyle.net/?q=surreal-city.
tbones__Guest_: i'm a seafood lover and the bf is deadly allergic to it, got any suggestion on where to go for great seafood and non seafood
Meredith_Goldstein: I feel bad for the bf. I really like scallops. Try this (scroll down to the bbq part for the bf): eastcoastgrill.net/menus/dinnermenu.htm
irishsinger__Guest_: Hi Meredith! Are there any Earth Day concerts planned like they've had at the Hatch Shell in years past?
Meredith_Goldstein: WBOS has its annual Earth Fest at the Hatch Shell on May 26th. The station announces this years lineup on Friday, so stay tuned. www.earthfest.com
amy__Guest_: Meredith, I'm 32 and single, where is the best place to go mingle with people my age?
Meredith_Goldstein: My apartment. With my roommates. Just kidding. Actually, Im not kidding. But really, just avoid the sticky spots. Try the B-Side in Cambridge, the Field in Central Square, maybe Harvard Gardens, maybe avoid Fenway, and try some Financial District bars when you get the chance. Im not sure what environment youre looking for, but generally, places that looked intimidating from the outside at 22 should look good to you now.
b__Guest_: my gf wants to get out this w/e, she would like to get drinks someplace during the day any suggestions?
Meredith_Goldstein: I havent stopped pushing the Beach Plum Martini at 28 Degrees. But Liza Weisstuch, our drinks expert, has written up some cool cocktails lately in Sidekick. Shes talked about something called The Secret at Pigalle in the Theater District and a tamarind margarita at the new Indian restaurant Mela in the South End. If the weather is good, you can take a nice walk after you sip at any of these spots.
kd101__Guest_: Do you know of any good bars/scoailizing spots to go to outside of Boston (Cambridge/Watertown/Somerville) for the mid to + 30's single crowd?
Meredith_Goldstein: What about Charlestown? Warren Tavern, maybe? Might be something different. In Somerville and Cambridge, there are many, many options. Maybe start with Bukowskis in Inman. I cant promise singles, but at the very least, you can get a good burger. And Atwoods Tavern is right up the street.
b__Guest_: Thank you very much
Meredith_Goldstein: No prob
ORLY__Guest_: Hey.. Just wondering of a good bar in Boston to watch the Sox/Yankees game on Saturday.. It's supposed to be nice out, so outdoor seating would be very welcome.. Not somewhere that will take me 20 minutes to get a drink, but not so desolate that My friends and I are the only ones there either..
Meredith_Goldstein: ORLY, you want a TV. You want to be outside. You want good service. Youre killing me here. Ok
most Fenway bars will keep you inside
(and will have sketchy service this Saturday)
heres my answer: Flanns on Tremont Street in Mission Hill. Big screens, fun people are almost always inside, and, if its nice out, they open their big windows. So you get the outside air while you watch TV. Mission accomplished. No pun intended. Ok, intended a little.
kd101__Guest_: Thanks Meredith - Temple Bar is good but i was looking for something a little different this weekend w/out having to deal with the Boston scene.
Meredith_Goldstein: Marina Bay in Quincy might also be an option for you, kd101. If its nice out, it should be a real vacation from the Boston scene.
Meredith_Goldstein: While youre all quiet, Ill take this space to tell you I spent some time with Single Volunteers Boston last weekend. For all of you where can I meet single 30somethings chat guests, heres the story: http://www.boston.com/ae/sidekick/insidekick/get_out/index.html. Theyre all single. And 30something. And cleaning the river this weekend.
ORLY__Guest_: Thanks a lot, just trying to make you work hard for the money! I'll check out Flanns
Meredith_Goldstein: Last time I was at Flanns, I had jalapeno poppers. With cream cheese. And they were obviously memorable.
Frank__Guest_: Have you ever done the Community boating on the Charles? Experiences?
Meredith_Goldstein: Ive never done it, but this would be the weekend to try, right? If you decide to get out there, will you let us know how it goes?
corey__Guest_: Hi Meredith, what's the hottest club to go this Friday
Meredith_Goldstein: Tough question. But if youre a real clubber, theres a great DJ from Detroit at RISE. The all-night club is invite-only, but the promoters of this event say that if you email them at party@soulclap.us, theyll get you on the list. The DJ is Carl Craig, who is an innovator in the techno scene. He used to do work for the Detroit Electronic Music Festival.
Meredith_Goldstein: Ok, everybody. Do you know what theyre serving in the Globe cafeteria? Corned Beef Swiss Melt. That means its time for me to eat. Lets meet same time next week. Try to spend some quality time outside this weekend. - meredith
