Get tips on what's hot this weekend. Sidekick's Meredith Goldstein is online every Thursday at 11 a.m. to talk about what's happening around the Hub.
The transcript follows.
Meredith_Goldstein: Hi there. Its Meredith with Sidekick. Lets chat about the weekend. Seems to be a good one for music and clubs.
Elsybethy__Guest_: I'm 24 and looking for things to do in and around Boston when the weather is cloudy and rainy on the weekend. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Meredith_Goldstein: Hi there, Elsybethy. I have a feeling its going to be a movie weekend. The Museum Of Fine Arts has some good screenings Saturday including Private Fears in Public Places. If you get there early, you can check out the Hopper exhibit. Also, people your age will be flocking to Harpoons Brewstock this weekend. Theres a covering, so everyone will stay warm and dry under the tent.

Ouch__Guest_: Hello, any singles bars to go to in Boston this weekend?
Ouch__Guest_: Which clubs would you recommend/
Meredith_Goldstein: Hi, Ouch. Looks like you need to get out. The Brewstock event will be one gigantic singles bar. Not sure where you live, but the Milky Way Lounge & Lanes in JP should be good on Friday. Its starting a new night called Color which will feature a nice mix of disco and underground funk. Single people will probably attend.
Meredith_Goldstein: milkywayjp.com
trixie__Guest_: Why aren't more events listed under"events" in the Thursday calendar. Why do I find out in Tuesday's Sidekick that the author of "THe Kite Runner" is appearing in Boston THAT NIGHT? Could you not have listed it in the previous week's calendar so that people can plan. The Calendar is becoming more useless every week. Can't your staffs communicate and keep people informed BEFORE the event?
Meredith_Goldstein: Hey Trixie. Sorry for the frustration. The idea of Calendar is to plan ahead. Sidekick (my beat) is for those who wake up and want to know what to do that day. We try to mix it up a bit in both publications so they can be useful, not repetitive, etc. But I understand the confusion. The listings in the back of Calendar should have everything even events that will eventually appear in Sidekick. Sadly, the venues dont always tell us about events soon enough to get them into that all-encompassing list.
Meredith_Goldstein: Hopefully you know that The Kite Runner author is appearing again tonight at the First Church in Cambridge.

Steve_Sanders__Guest_: Most importantly where are you going to be this weekend?
Meredith_Goldstein: Im considering Summer Jam on Saturday. The new Kelly Rowland song is making me very happy. And Ludacris makes me happy all of the time. Even when hes on Law & Order.
Meredith_Goldstein: summerjam.jamn945.com/main.html
justfriends_2__Guest_: a good guy friend and i are going to be hanging out on friday night and are looking for something to do. all the options seem to be real date-like and coupley. and suggestions for a cool, chill place to hang out that isnt romantic?
Meredith_Goldstein: Sounds like youre afraid this person is going to put the moves on.
Meredith_Goldstein: Understandable. Harvard Square is having a Patios in Bloom festival from Friday to Sunday where restaurants and business will be showing botanicals and serving up special menus. I recommend hitting Harvest for the special lemonade drink the restaurant has whipped up. Sounds too romantic, you say? Follow it up by catching Gracie at the movie the Loews in Harvard Square. Nothing kills the mood like a movie about soccer.
just__Guest_: no, not at all. we've both been trying to think of fun things to do but all of it sounds like first-date stuff. maybe just a recommendation of a cool bar in the cambridge area?
Meredith_Goldstein: You know, I was going to suggest comedy, but even Improv Asylum happens to be having an 80s prom on Friday. Random. (although that might be a good pick for others). improvasylum.com/shows/80s-prom
Meredith_Goldstein: Maybe the garden stuff in Harvard Square and then a stop at the Plough & Stars. Theyll have the band Brimstone Assembly up from Providence. Good just-friends garage music. And there should be some quiet time for chatting.
Meredith_Goldstein: ploughandstars.com
Elsybethy__Guest_: Thanks for all your suggestions Meredith they are very helpful and informative
Meredith_Goldstein: Thanks!
candogg__Guest_: where is a good cigar bar
Meredith_Goldstein: Hi, Candogg. I like this place: tuftscigarroom.com.
Meredith_Goldstein: I mean, Im not really a cigar person, but the employees there are very nice.
Aja1__Guest_: Hi Meredith, did you catch the Steely Dan concert Tuesday or last night?
Meredith_Goldstein: No, but after mentioning the band in Sidekick, I had Rikki Dont Loose That Number in my head for TWO hours. Did you go? Any good?
ghoulie__Guest_: your thoughts on boston duck tours
Meredith_Goldstein: Ive never done a Duck Tour here. But Ive heard theyre worth it, even if you live here. I did one in Miami and it was, sadly, the highlight of the trip. At the nightclubs, I was still thinking about the stupid Duck Tour. So I say go. Its a bit pricey, but Ive never heard any complaints.
Meredith_Goldstein: While Ive got everyones attention, theres a fun activity at the Cask N Flagon tonight where theyre giving away Sox-Yankees tickets to the person who can come up with the most creative, profanity-free rant about Clemens. Also, Pete Wentz is at Gypsy Bar. Not a bad Thursday.
diski__Guest_: yankee red sox whooo hooo
Meredith_Goldstein: So they say.
Aja1__Guest_: We saw the Tuesday show...magnificent! The review in sidekick was good...but I disagreed with the "lack of energy" comment.
Meredith_Goldstein: www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2007/05/31/steely_dan_fills_need_for_deep_70s_fusion
diski__Guest_: where is the best place to watch the games in your opinion besides fenway?
Meredith_Goldstein: I like the Squealing Pig off Huntington (games with salmon toastie). I like the Playwright in South Boston (games with turkey artichoke Panini). I should say those venues are close to my work and home, but Id like them for games even if they werent convenient.
Meredith_Goldstein: Ok folks, my chatting hour is over. If I didnt get to your question (person who asked about the best street musicians Im still thinking
), feel free to email me at mgoldstein@globe.com. Or check in next week, same place, same time. Have a good weekend. - M
