For five years and counting, the "Weekly Wax" showdown has gone down on Monday nights at River Gods. Next week, Oberlin-educated electronic music melder and producer DJ Dream, a.k.a. Matt Mascolo (right), the IDM (industrial dance music) part of the equation, will face off with DJ Hyssop, a.k.a. Maine native Gordon Mangum, a jazz man and electronic musician who prefers the downtempo side of things. "Gordon is going to focus on the loungey-downtempo-laid-back-groove stuff, and I'll be playing the more cerebral squelched-beats-jagged-synth-line stuff," says Mascolo. Hyssop will use real-time sampling loops and a laptop in addition to the turntables, while Dream combines CDs with samples and effects added via the Korg Kaoss Pad. 8 p.m. No cover. River Gods, 125 River St., Cambridge. 617-576-1881.![]()
