November 29, 2007

Tonight is the final installment of singer-songwriter Mary Lou Lord's Thursday night November residency at the Plough & Stars. At her most recent show, the Salem native performed her own melodic originals and songs that ranged from Loudon Wainwright III to Richard Thompson for an attentive crowd; guest guitarist David Fischer joined in for a few numbers. Lord's a cappella version of Steve Goodman's "The Ballad of Penny Evans," written from the perspective of a Vietnam War widow, quieted the bar to a hush with its chorus "Now they say the war is over, but I think it's just begun." 21-plus. 10 p.m., $5. Plough & Stars, 912 Massachusetts Ave. 617-576-0032. ploughandstars.com [Charan Devereaux]
