Blogging under 21

Brookline native Max Pearl, an 18-year-old student at Hampshire College in Amherst, has a blog called "Under 21 in Boston" (under21inboston.typepad.com). While the project is still young, the website's goal is provide a resource, including an interactive calendar and listings of venues for the "elusive, inaccessible places" - that often lack a solid Internet presence - where events for all ages take place. During an interview over the holidays, Pearl sketched out some ideas for under-21 fun:

Massachusetts College of Art: The variety of events at Mass Art is impressive, including musicians who play "progressive, avant, often electronica-based music ranging from dance-pop, to metal, to abrasive noise-music," Pearl says. He also notes that "their shows are always all ages, and are usually five bucks to enter." Pitchfork-feted "indy-dance pop-culture kingpin of our generation" Dan Deacon is scheduled to play the Pozen Center on Jan. 31. Pozen Center, Mass Art, 621 Huntington Ave., Boston. 617-879-7000. mass art.edu, myspace.com/dandeacon

Phoenix Landing: The 19+ drum 'n' bass night at the Cambridge club is a favorite Pearl recommendation. It's on every Thursday night and it's called "Elements." Pearl calls it "just a nice bar where an under-21-year-old can drink soda, chat, and listen to good dance music. The cover is usually only five bucks." 10 p.m. $5. Phoenix Landing, 512 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge. 617-576-6260. myspace.com/phoenixlanding

Institute of Contemporary Art: The ICA is a welcoming venue that's "driven and even curated by a young crowd," says Pearl. Rachel McAdamz, a band Pearl is a member of, played an open-mike there last year, and he says he digs the "intense and challenging film festivals" at the ICA as well. He notes that the museum is easily accessible via public transportation and the Silver Line, even though some people are under the impression that it's a trek.
