The Night Is Young

A cartoon afternoon

The night may be young, but the daytime is even younger this weekend.

Tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. you can get in touch with your inner child's love of Saturday morning cartoons and your deep, possibly untapped love of classical music during WCRB's 10th annual Classical Cartoon Festival at Symphony Hall.

The Warner Bros. cartoons set to classical scores, from the Bugs Bunny Wagner spoof "What's Opera, Doc" to the Tom & Jerry short "Cat Concerto," aren't being screened on some rinky-dink TV, either. They'll be played on a 16-by-20-foot screen in the hall's cavernous main room.

The program is geared toward getting kids excited about classical music, said Tim Neill, promotions director for WCRB, but it draws an eclectic crowd every year. And who doesn't love cartoons? Warner Bros. has even shipped the original reels from its vault in Burbank, Calif. - complete with scratches and charming imperfections, Neill said.

To prevent potential Bugs Bunny overdose, WCRB is also offering other entertainment options throughout the day, like a hip tribute to Polaroid film, featuring the Lexington Symphony. The musicians will perform a multimedia concert exploring the relationship between photos and music.

The day kicks off early, but don't feel like you have to drag yourself out of bed too early. "Even if they get up at the crack of noon, they can still make it out," Neill said. And if you find yourself in need of caffeine when the events comes to a close, you can stroll over to Newbury Street and settle in at cozy cafes such as Trident, Espresso Royale, and Tealuxe.

Classical Cartoon Festival, Sat 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. $10 (proceeds benefit the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts). Symphony Hall, 301 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. 617-266-1492. bso.org
