A one-two punch from the SMFA
Not all art is found inside the corridors of prestigious museums, especially in Boston. Young people on a budget can skip entrance fees at the city's art landmarks and still get a good dose of culture.
Over the next week, artists from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts are showing off their chops with a pair of events, featuring everything from light sculptures to jewelry made out of recycled beer caps.
Today and tomorrow, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., take a stroll down Museum Road, located by the Back Bay Fens, and browse tables crammed with student work at the school's 10th annual Spring Sidewalk Sale. Prices start at $2 - on par with your T fare; proceeds benefit the Dorchester Community Center for the Visual Arts.
Beginning Monday, work by 21 graduating SMFA students will be featured at the second annual Senior Projects exhibition. The number of contributing students has nearly doubled since last year, so you can expect more variety - including videos, collages, and a series of impressive aerial photographs. The opening reception is Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. (It's free, just like every event at the Museum School), and the exhibit is up through May 18.
The Fenway is teeming with restaurants and clubs, so afterward, venture to Lansdowne Street or Yawkey Way to unwind. Grab some cheap, authentic tacos from La Verdad or a banana split from Emack & Bolio's - just as fulfilling as the finest art.
