When we were forced to take art class, our finished product didn’t look any different from a preliminary sketch. How does an artist prepare to create a masterpiece? The Boston Center for the Arts Drawing Show examines how artists convey their ideas through drawings (Gwen Barba's work, above) at the start of the creative process. Works by 36 artists feature prints for final products in sculpture, video, digital prints, and more. Sept. 19 is Family Day when young creative types can attend mural-making workshops led by resident artists (1-3 p.m.). Opening reception tonight at 6. (Through Oct. 25). Free. The Boston Center for the Arts Mills Gallery, 539 Tremont St., Boston. 617-426-5000. www.bcaonline.org
