We wonder if farewell concerts in the classical world are like those in the pop world, where goodbye can sound like hello. Sunday is Frederica von Stade’s Farewell Recital. The mezzo-soprano nicknamed Flicka made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 1970 and has taken on all the great roles with the company for four decades. Joining von Stade as her special guest is soprano and longtime friend Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. The program will include works by Mozart, Belioz, Poulenc, Copland, and Offenbach. Pianist Brian Zeger will accompany. Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. $33-$87. Symphony Hall, 301 Massachusetts Ave. 617-482-6661. www.celebrityseries.org
