Tips for Carving Your Jack-o-Lanterns
Select a pumpkin that is large enough and close to the shape of the pattern you are going to carve. Choose a pumpkin that is smooth as possible. Lighter colored pumpkins are softer and easier to carve.
Be nice to your pumpkin. Don't drop it or carry it around by its stem. Clean it with plain water and a sponge and allow it to dry before carving it.
Your design is based upon your imagination - but keep it simple. The fewer the curves, angles and cuts, the better the final result.
Trace the design on the pumpkin with a small knife or a pencil by punching through the paper before carving.
To carve a perfectly scary jack-o-lantern, you will need an ice cream scoop, a long thin knife and a small paring knife.
A plastic "pumpkin-carving" knife is designed for carving pumpkins and is less likely to cause an injury. It's easily found in supermarkets during the pumpkin season.
Begin by cutting open the top of the pumpkin with the long knife. While you can cut a round circle out, you'll find that cutting a five or six sided opening will work the best.
As you cut out the top hole, angle the knife so that the lid and hole will be somewhat cone shaped. This will help prevent the lid from falling into the hole.
Using an ice cream scoop, scrape the inside wall to an inch thick, making the pumpkin easier to carve.
To make sharp corners, always remove the knife completely and re-insert it at a different angle.
Toothpicks are a good option for adding on ears, fangs and horns.
Candles can always add a "hallowed" glow to the pumpkin. But note - use battery operate lights rather than candles when the jack-o-lantern is indoor.
Trying using a small bowl of water and dry ice inside your jack-o-lantern to let off a little steam.
To ensure your jack-o-lantern lasts as long as possible, apply a light coat of petroleum jelly on the cuts. It will seal the edges and the pumpkin will last longer.
After carving, place the pumpkin in a cool, dry place - like your front stoop!
