National Hunger Awareness Day helps those in need

With so much attention focused lately on our overfed nation, it's easy to forget that there are Americans who don't get enough to eat. For millions, many of them children and the elderly, hunger is more regular and persistent than the kind experienced when you're cutting Whopper buns from your diet. On June 3, National Hunger Awareness Day will aim to remind us of this fact. Food banks and food rescue programs all over the country will be sponsoring events to raise money to address the issue.

The Greater Boston Food Bank is at the forefront of the effort in the Boston area, cosponsoring a hunger forum with the Boston Foundation on June 4, 8:30-10:30 a.m., and providing opportunities for people to get involved in other ways, such as organizing a food drive at school or hosting a fund-raising potluck. Share our Strength/Operation Frontline has also planned a wine-tasting event at the Cambridge Boat Club on June 3, 6:30-10 p.m, to raise money for local hunger prevention programs.
