What's new in the cookbook bin

I was going through the new books that have come into the Food section recently. What a huge mound there is! Sometimes I wonder why the publishers have said yes to some of these sorry volumes. But there are always a few gems.

One is the new "Real Simple: Meals Made Easy," with a striking photograph across from each recipe. You'll want to dig your fork into pasta with peas and lemon, with its golden circles of jalapeno and thin slices of garlic sauteed and tossed with spaghetti. Or how about poached halibut with green beans and potatoes, which looks so slimming that the pounds will fall off you during dinner? An entire chapter on no-cook meals offers chicken salad with peaches and blue cheese (good for a hot summer night) and bowls of sweet pea and mint soup in a startling bright green hue. Also on my desk is "Maida Heatter's Book of Great Chocolate Desserts," just reissued by Andrews McMeel Publishing. First published in 1980, "Great Chocolate Desserts" contains many recipes that have become classics: "black and white cake, a high marbled affair with a very dark streak of chocolate; the brownies Heatter has been making since she was a girl; and all manner of cookies, sauces, curls, and tortes. If you're serious about chocolate and baking, this is required reading. Sheryl Julian
