« Mexican food in Kansas | Main | What I cooked on my summer vacation, part 1 » Monday, July 10, 2006Extra innings with icy Moscato d'AstiBy the 16th inning last night, most of the food at my friend Bernie Flanagan's party for his wife, Ann O'Meara, had been put away. Ann is retiring from her teaching job at Winsor School (Until he retired, Bernie taught French at Newton North High School). He had marinated asparagus, roasted several beef tenderloins, stuffed hot dog rolls with lobster salad, and made a glorious platter of ratatouille. The only thing he didn't make were Ikea's famous little Swedish meatballs. After Bernie gave Ann a moving toast, we tucked into a Konditor Meister cake. But the game went on and on. So Bernie pulled the lobster salad from the fridge and made more mini top-loaded rolls. A bottle of moscato, a fizzy little Italian number, had been left out and turned too warm. So someone suggested pouring it over ice, which made a fabulous drink -- like Italian juleps. It was a fitting end to a nice day. When the Sox finally lost, at least we had Ann and Italy to celebrate. Posted by Sheryl Julian at 11:16 AM
